Need help with wiring for the tekonsha p3

I need help some wiring for my teknonsha p3 to the factory wiring harness. I just need to know which wires goes to which ones??

Here's a picture of both of the plugs and wires. The stock harness has 5 wires but the p3 only has 4

 

The P3 should have labels on the wires or a diagram that states what each wire is. I know that the tacoma wiring harness has a diagram.

 

Buy the adapter and it is just plug in. Makes it super easy.

 

@Saechao503 , I second this. The adapter makes install effortless. Installed mine on 2nd gen in less than 10 min (and that included deciding where to mount the controller).

 

I am thinking about getting this controller, where did you get the adapter

I bought the wiring harness for the Tekonsha brake controller and there's a ground wire. The instructions say to tie it to an already grounded wire but I can't find one near the plug in for this. Anyone have any advice that's done this before? It says if there's no existing ground to drill and screw it to the metal.

It didn't come the screw it was supposed to, and I'd rather not drill into my truck anyway.

There is a forum on this in the towing section. It shows which bolt to hook it to. It has pics in it. I looked at it and that made it simple. I’ll look back and see if l can find it. The bolt already is there, holding something else on. Just unscrew it put bolt thru ground wire piece and put right back.

 

Look up “Who has the Tekonsha P3 brake controller installed”. It was on page 3 of towing section. It showed where to hook the ground wire.

 

Thanks for the info. The pic for the ground wire isn't great though. I think I found a good place for it, but I don't know a lot about wiring. There is another plastic plug with a bunch of wires connected to a bolt that's going into the metal. Is this a good place to put my ground wire? I don't want to put it in the wrong spot and end up frying something!

 

Not sure where you are talking about. It needs good metal to metal contact for the ground. I believe it said there are several bolts that could be used. Read the forum posts. I did a couple times. No problems after that.

Thanks for all the help! I've got the controller wired and mounted with velcro tape. Now I can't wait to pick up my brand new R Pod tomorrow!

 

I put mine in the little cubby hole. Nice and secure. Let’s see pics of it and your R Pod.

 

So much easier and nicer to do plug and play. I don’t usually have any luck splicing wires. Murphy’s Law takes over for me then.
