Why get a truck? Sounds like a 4Runner would be much better for you. If you want new then you also get a wayyy better power train and interior. Just a higher quality vehicle in general.

Lived in West Covina and worked in DTLA.

I went from a 2005 DCSB to a 2017 DCLB. I have an easier time parking the Long bed due to the backup camera. It made all the difference. I could get within inches of cars when parallel parking without worrying if I'm going to hit them. And like others said, backing into spots when you can is way easier than having to try to turn into spots front ways.

I live in Santa Clara up north now and go to SF regularly. I have to make a few more turns around the block to find a big enough parking spot, but it is never unbearable.

Go with the DCLB, it checks off all the utility boxes for you and those things are what you'll miss on your surf/ camping trips. As for the size, maneuverability, parking, etc.. you'll get used to it. I've never driven my truck during my daily routine and wished I had a sedan. However, I have been on trips in my friends/family cars and wished we took my truck instead.

So I’m starting to think about going access cab. They are my favorite looking and 90 percent of the time it’s just me and 1 other person. I’ll just live with not being able to drive more than 1 person however I feel like a smaller size person could ride in the back seat if they sit horazontal and just put some pillows and blankets for cushion. Long road trip would probably get old but a 3 hour drive to the desert could manage. But either way I’m getting the truck for the bed not the cab. DCLB is just too big for what I do day to day, need to accept that.

@hex989 I’m going Tacoma cause I just love them and I love having a bed that I can be dirty in and just toss in sandy boards/wetsuits, bikes etc. I also want to build a camping sleeping platform setup.

I’m gonna do some text driving but I think I’m leaning forward access cab TRD OR and I’m definitely putting a shell on it, most likely a snug top hi liner sport

Surfer here. You can fit up to about 6’1” diagonally in the short bed. I came from a 2012 A3 hatch. Parking isn’t bad in the DCLB because I just back in every time and the camera and side mirrors make it easy. I don’t live in an area like LA.

Putting boards straight in is super nice. Definitely think you’ll be happier with the 6 foot bed (AC or DC).

So, I'm 6'2", and can fit diagonally in the 5 foot bed (look into the sleeper platform mods from those w/ the camper shells)

Couldn't you place the surfboards on a roof rack?

Only my opinion, but using a roof rack kind of makes it unnecessary to have a truck bed (you could use any car then). Also, it's some added hassle to get up top to tie down.

I could but I don’t even do that in my hatchback car. Although it’s fairly quick and easy I really don’t want to do that every time. I just want to toss it in and go. Also I usually surf in the morning and then go to work or about my day so I need to lock them up.

20190412_193824.jpg 20190330_184511.jpg surfboards fit fine in the short bed. At an angle of course. I have a bunch of 5"10s no problems.

Dealers are trying hard to move the ‘19s right now. There will be a small difference in price between a used 3rd gen and a new one. Plus, if you go new, you will be the first to fart in the driver seat.

I’ve been calling a few around me and telling them I’ll give them $32,000 for a TRD off road access cab. Mostly getting lot of semi angry responses haha. I feel like one might cave and give me a call back.

And dumb question here but can you swap out the wheel flares on the sr5 to the black ones that come on a TRD. The photos I’ve seen it looks like they are build into the body

Try to find a high volume dealer at month end, they will want the business the most. I’m in Massachusetts but I got $6k off on a manual TRD OR without even negotiating at the end of March. That was at a $39k sticker.

As for the flares, I don’t know for sure, but it’s probably a fit.

Go with the access cab. I can fit a 7'0 egg in the bed diagonally and still lock the bed (I have a tonneau cover). My 6'1 bonzer fits straight. It's a better looking truck. If you need to haul people for a road trip go on your girlfriend's car. At least that's what I do.

Yeah I think that’s what I’m going with, they are just much better looking trucks and a 6 foot bed is mandatory. Then we have the mid size suv for driving people around. Also being able to fit a mid length in the bed would be nice too.

Only advice I can offer is I have a Access cab. I wouldn't ride in that back seat more than a 15 minute trip (like to the beach). It's fine when the grandkids visit, but that's the extent of it. But if you really don't like your riders, who cares about their comfort?

My thinking was I'd use the longer bed a whole lot more often than a rear seat. So far, that been the case.

I totally agree. It's actually easier backing into tight parking spaces. Try this when you go for a test drive. DCLB's rule! especially for outdoor gear.

Get an access cab and get people to convoy with you for camping trips in their own car. They haul their shit in their vehicles, you keep yours in yours. That way you get your bed space, you get a place to have your most important (lady) and then your dogs. Plus they look the best.
