Bad Mileage

Have new 2010 Tacoma 6cyl double cab w/topper. I have run 7 tanks of gas through it, 6 of which I have monitored. My lowest was 12.69 MPG, highest 13.88 MPG with an average of 13.52. This is all around town driving, within the speed limits, no jack rabbit starts.

Other Tacoma owners in my area of various vintages are claiming 20 plus MPG on average.

My dealership says the truck has to get broken in and that I should drive at least 5000 miles before I get a true picture of the mileage. It does not make sense to me that a truck averaging 13.52 MPG will adjust itself after a break-in period to 17-21 MPG.

Am I being a whiner here?

It will take some time to break in, one reason is the truck will learn your driving.... your mileage will increase

 

What did the window sticker say about mileage???

 

Hmmm, I thought about this when I got mine, the computer might be used to test drives done by others, so I would disconnect your battery for... what is it 30 seconds?... then connect it back up, drive as you normally do and let it relearn how you drive.

to reset newer ECMs the power wire needs to be off the for longer than a few minutes... if u wanted to reset it i would recommend keeping the wire off all nite long

 

Ive read those claims of 20mpg's too... but I have never came close to that (even before my lift w/ larger tires). Averaging 14.88mpg's on my last fill.
If you're running a stock truck, I would imagine you should be getting close to what the window sticker says for city driving... keep an eye on it. I'm sure it will get better, but if it doesnt, see what advice the dealer has for you. perhaps reseting the ECU will help as suggested above.

Don't believe what others say about their MPG.

 

I got about 22mph on highway going 70mph on cruise... mine is auto 4x4. Regular daily/mostly city driving I average 16-17mph.

I've had my Double Cab/Off Road/4X4 for about 5 months now. I drive mostly around town too. I typically get between 14.5-15.5 mpg. I do have a lift and bigger tires on. I have noticed that my mpg has gotten a bit better with time and the truck just seems a bit more responsive as well....Maybe I'm getting used to it or it could be that the engine is in fact getting "broken in". I think these trucks would get better mileage with a bigger engine. The V6 with only 236 HP really has to work to move these 2 ton vehicles---particularly when you're driving mostly around town.

 

I drive like a old man, well I am a old man and I'm at about 18-ish around town and 21.5 to 22 on the highway depending if I have a load or not. If I can keep the speed to 65 it might be a tad bit better. ScanGauge tells me my average is 17-18 MPG.

 

Have you checked your speed via gps? with those larger tires you move faster keeping the rpms lower, so actually your getting better mpg. 285/75 isnt a small diameter tire..

 

Actually you need to check your odometer with a GPS and/or multiple long mile marker runs.
My 2002 odometer is reading 5% low with the tires I have on it so I need to multiple my miles traveled by 1.05 to get a corrected distance.

 

That is true... but before larger tires I was only seeing about 1 mpg better. But thank you for pointing that out as I forgot to mention the change in rolling diameter.

PS: The fuelly in my sig is just me calculating miles driven by amt of gas put into the tank. I have not modified the miles driven due to larger tire size. So my mpg's are probably a little better than shown but my GPS does not allow me to calculate/record trips in a way that I could record this type of data.

 

this is a blanket statement and not a very good piece of advice...maybe dont believe anyone who can't back it up with there mileage log...if they keep one that is.

13 mpg??? there is something wrong...give me a break. i have a 6 speed manual and not on my worst day have i EVER gotten even 14 mpgs. you would think an auto would get better mileage than me. I have gotten as high as 19 and that is after my lift and 33x12 inch tires. my average is around 17 and i have plenty of data to back this up.

 

I would do that as a next step if it was off lol. It seems as if a few cars are 1-2 mph off, my radar detector displays my speed, i rarely look at the speedo.

 

Mine gets 13mpg in town on 87 octane. Gets almost 15mpg on 91 under the same conditions. Highway is anywhere from 18-22 on 91 octane depending on terrain, speed, etc. I don't think there is anything wrong with mine, I just figure that's the way it is. I don't beat on the truck, nor do I drive like an old man. Putting a shell on didn't make any difference.

Duh, Speedometer has nothing to do with it. You need to check the distance traveled which is displayed by the odometer.
