Aviation BS and Photo Thread

They're helicopters, nothing is high speed. That said, we can fly as low as we want (within the unit commanders tolerance for receiving noise complaints).

 

Says the guy who thinks army helicopters are using IR/VR routes. LOL. Most SOPs limit 500ft AGL.

Done the 320 and 767 full motions. Got about 9 hrs logged in them, left seat. Now the commercial guys can jump in and beat me up lol

 

On a field trip with my 1st grader at the local airport and two of these pull in. One had a woman pilot/copilot and the other both men. Airport guy said that sometimes there will be 6 or more parked there. They fly up from Eglin AFB to Hattiesburg, MS at the municipal Bobby Chain for training. Then an sUV meets them and they’ll go get lunch.

Done a lot of aviating lately for both work and pleasure. Flew the Cardinal to the NCAA championship game (not sure if I told y'all about that), flew to a concert, did a pilots n paws rescue, then went back to work. Currently in Charlottesville, VA.

I know many of yal use ipads.. is cellular version a must over wifi? Signal is mostly non existent most of the time flying anyways. I was just told to save money and buy the wifi version and buy a gps puck

 

If you’re going to be gone a lot and especially out of country, I’d spring for both cellular and WiFi....or just tether it to your phone all the time.

 

I have cellular because it's not dedicated to one plane, and I can use it anywhere. Lot's of places you can't pick up wifi, even on the flight line.

 

Yes absolutely 100000% I would NOT recommend a WiFi only iPad for flying. There have been so many times I have needed the cellular data when checking weather or filing flight plans away from WiFi. Also, the cellular iPad has built in GPS that will always track your location whether you actually have a cellular data plan active for the iPad. I just have my iPad on a shared data plan with my phone.

 

Depending on what you’re flying, and where you’re flying: the data signal may not work. However, the data + WiFi iPads have internal GPS which helps with taxi charts, en route, etc. If you buy a WiFi only iPad, it still works but needs a GPS source To locate yourself on the charts.

If you go WiFi only, research the Stratux (with an X). It is a DIY ADS-B receiver that can have GPS, and free weather information on most EFB apps. You can get traffic, weather, METAR, PIREPS, and more through it

 

This is a good option, but tethering is a drain on the phone's battery. A cellular iPad Pro might be a better choice in this particular application because of battery life.

 

Pretty sure the dude on the right was a classmate of mine at VT. He's about at that phase in the Navy pipeline.

 

Another point worth making when buying an iPad. If you don't have a power outlet in your A/C, then purchase a USB battery pack. The battery on an iPad mini is about 5,000mAh, so consider a 10,000mAh battery pack or larger. They are not very large, or expensive but come in handy when flying.

Yeah, I keep one in my bag but have never used it. It’s nice to have backup power.
