Should I Get Some Heat Shields?

Hey all, I recently had my exhaust rerouted so that I could put a flat RCI T-case skid on. I'm a little worried about how close the pipes now run to the black box (T-case actuator?). I asked the shop what they thought and they said it's really not anything to worry about. I'm curious what you guys think, am I just being paranoid? If you do recommend I get some shielding, can you recommend or link anything in particular?

From the picture angle it looks too close.with the RCI skidplate in place it will be closed so heat will not escape. Of course they will say it's ok because they will have to redo it. On the other hand, if the plastic doesn't melt, then it might be ok.

Put a heat shield on it. They say it's okay but they are not the ones paying for it. Better safe than sorry!

 

If it's as close as it looks, it's too close for comfort. Wrap it up.

Pardon the naive question, but does that wrap go right onto the exhaust pipe? That's what it looks like, but just want to triple check before I do it. Thanks!

edit: other TW members made a good point about heat wrap exposed to elements is not a good idea.

 

Is it something you can pull off and ceramic coat? I wouldn’t use heat wrap because it’ll end up rusting out. Even if the plastic isn’t melting I would imagine the electronics are still getting pretty hot

 

Put a heat shield on the actuator, they are not the strongest of parts in the first place, so anything that can make them even more temperamental is not good. Don’t use that exhaust wrap in an area where you will get water & dirt, it has devastating effects on exhausts if not kept completely clean and dry. Engine compartment ok, under vehicle not a chance in the world I’d use it. It holds moisture and dirt next to the steel and with the heat / cool cycles will rust it in no time. Also shield on the actuator will work 10x better than shielding on the exhaust, since you should get airflow on both surfaces on the shield.

 

Good point about ceramic coating, far better than wrap.

 

Are you referring to pulling off the exhaust and coating it? I don't think I'd be able to do that. Is it possible to coat it while it's on the truck?

 

I think it would be fine, but a heat shield cant hurt. That fiber wrap stuff that one of tbe guys linked actually works pretty good, I've seen it used on tractors to protect fiberglass hoods with no issues.

 

I coated mine inside and out with Eastwoods ceramic spray. It did drop temps about 50F. I aslo use:

Did you wrap that aluminum shield around the t-case actuator?

The heat shield products that aren't fiberglass tape actually fare vary well.
