The Lair

Thinking of ditching the swingout, and here's my reasons why. Curious to hear others thoughts on it.

• Don't need the spare fuel. I just go to off road parks, not alaska. I'll toss a 1 gallon tank in the bed for trips.
• Don't camp that much, so the fold down table isn't a necessity.
• Can easily relocate the shovel and axe.
• That leaves the spare tire. I would fab something up to hold it vertically behind my fridge.
• It would save weight in the ass end with no swingout or spare fuel or tire (about 200 lbs)
• I wouldn't need to open it every time I wanted to get in the bed.

 

Ditch it, just cool looking weight. Plus hauling anything slightly too long is a hassle.

No reason you can't strap a fuel can to your bed or fab up some sort of fuel can/spare tire retainer. Back to the drawing board to design something, and with the block layer printable angles, it makes it that much more possible to fab something up

 

I never haul anything of length anyways, but it would still be nice to sorta have that option. I say sorta because my fridge and tire will still take up half my bed.

I'd just feel bad wasting the swingout. It's not like anyone could reuse it since it's mobtown specific. But I could at least sell the gas can holder and table bits from it.

 

Same here. Moving was annoying having to open and engage the swingout

 

Exactly. It's cool, and functional, but the more I think about it I really don't need it. I'm finding myself wheeling way more than camping (can't even tell you the last time I camped, probably been 6 months). So it makes sense in my mind to change it up a little bit and make it more wheeling friendly. Not like a swingout isn't, but it'd be nice to shed some weight.

I think you should keep it. The swingout chili cookouts have been awesome. Ditch the fuel can and go with a rotopax or some type of recovery gear box. Also, the swingout keeps other wheeling buddies from running into your tailgate. Plus, it just looks cool. Haha

 

I’ve pretty much made up my mind but I’m gonna sleep on it. I would build a tire holder like you designed, and bolt it in the bed. It’d be rock solid.

I hope it doesn't sling off onto the drum/brake pads.
I know this sounds paranoid but that's some slippery, nasty, shit and it taste bad too.

 

If it did I probably wouldn’t even notice. Before I had metal on metal in there so literally anything is an upgrade.

Right after I posted that I changed my mind. I’ll have to check, but I believe could just cut up my swingout and salvage the part that holds the spare. Weld it to a 1/4” thick, 6” square and bolt that to the bed with some 1/2” hardware. Would be easy and free.

Been back and forth on it. The move changed my mind.

 

OK. I'll call the lawyers and tell them to hold off on litigation.
