I'd never buy a Wal-Mart owned bike. I don't want my money going to them, especially not in the area of my hobbies, like bikes. I agree with what you're saying about them.

But I have to say i disagree with your statement about Canyon/YT and direct-to-consumer though. I like that model, and competitive pricing creates incentives for the other brands to innnovate, compete, etc. LBS's will always have a role, especially with maintenance and repairs. I think that's where LBS's business needs to be focused, for them to survive.

Yea I'm not impressed by it, and I doubt, and hope that they don't, gain much traction in that space.

I'm thinking anyone serious about bikes will be staying away. But I think that anyone who is bike curious and doesn't want a huffy, but can't afford a stumpjumper level bike may be tempted.

Jesus, yeah that would make it hard to live there. I reckon its pretty gentrified there too.

I get a lot of those marketing vibes too, legit everyone around me here in memphis has nothing but incredible things to say about the place.

They have a carbon hardtail.... with full gold XX1 components.... for $6,000 hahahha

Yeah to be completely honest, I own a YT. I dont think they are putting any LBS out of business. They are imo disrupting the bike industry in a good way. Delivering better specd bikes to people by cutting out one person (wholesaler). This delivers the savings to the consumer. Other bike companies will probably adopt to this or do something similar with the LBS that sell their bikes. I still take my bike to the LBS for fork and shock service and for bottom bracket stuff and installs of things I dont know how to do, I also try to shop there when I can for tires, tubeless sealant, etc.

I feel like bike companies like YT/Canyon/and Commencal are seriously shaking up the game similarly to how netflix and redbox did to blockbuster. Youll either have to get with the times or die out. All this competition benefits me... the consumer so im cool with it.

For example, I was looking for a 2,500 full suspension bike. I had the YT at 2,300 which came with NX Eagle 12 speed, fox rhythm fork and non proprietary rear shock. Tubeless ready DHR2s and DT Swiss wheels. The only thing in the same price range local to me was a Trek Fuel EX 5 with a much worse fork, proprietary shock, much worse drivetrain which is 10 speed, worse brakes, no dropper post, etc.

I got the better deal, and my YT ripps harder than my old 2014 Trek Remedy 9 with fox factory stuff.

Just my personal experience. I did end up buying my wife a Trek Roscoe 8 from my lbs though because I got a killer deal on it. I was originally in the market for a Yeti dentist-mobile, but my wife expressed interest in riding with me, so I took my yeti money and bought two bikes for the price of one lol

I wonder if one could buy the bike... replace the XX1 stuff with GX... and then return it to walmart... Not saying I would ever do that... because that is hella unethical...

The average walmart employee would have not a damn clue what he is looking at.

A friend of mine returned a lawnmower that he had seized tight because he forgot to put oil in it on unboxing...

Neither of them knew any better so they just warrantied it...

Also... if anyone is looking for a bike... all "race" model YTs are $1,000 off right now.. so youre getting full fox factory stuff on a carbon FS Bike with the new 1x12 shimano XTR components, carbon wheels, carbon bar, guide rsc brakes, fox transfer factory dropper and stuff for $4,700. Kinda kicking myself for not waiting hah

Not disagreeing with you at all, but what many don’t realize is how political the bike industry is. The profit margins on high-end bikes is slim (It’s way larger on lower end bikes). Majority of a LBS’s business is in fact repairs, tuneups, and accessory sales. However (this is where the politics start) buying from component companies is often not what it used to be.... For example ordering direct from Shimano is not really possible. Now it is most often done through the brands in which a shop carries (unless its a huge shop or online retailer). A Giant retailer orders shimano parts through Giant. It sounds trivial but the pressure is already on the local shops with their margins, rent/mortgage, utilities.... The direct to consumer model is great until down the road there are fewer and fewer shops for those consumers to go to. It sounds like doom and gloom but the direct-sale model brands don’t worry about it because it doesn’t affect them. Where as brick and morter is reliant on all of these aspects. At the end of the day, we can’t please everyone. The MTB industry is real cutthroat in all honesty, which is why I got out of regular side work at a bike shop and focused all my side work time growing Christmas Trees.

Yea, I'm all for whatever benefits consumers. I'm not going to spend more money on an already expensive hobby just to benefit a business. Though I would absolutely rather my money go to an LBS or independent bike company than fucking Wal-mart.

Ironically annoying is that every time someone here types the company name; it gets hot linked in the reply... at least on my browser/screen it does and I'm running all manner of cookie/ad blockers.

Oh yeah 100% not really trying to ride a walmart bike hahah

Dude me too, I think that is a forum thing, because I have a lot of adblockers going and I still get the "products discussed in" at the bottom of the screen and also the hyperlinked text.

God that drop into Horsethief. Haven't been there in probably 10 years and still remember it well. The videos of people cleaning it always blow my mind.

Just picked up a slightly used black 1up single rack +2nd bike extension for $450.

Anyone running the 1up get hassled by cops for the rack covering the plate? I know 1up sells the license plate mod, which is $50. Open to cheaper non janky options to move my plate to the rack

Just created a homemade Bike bracket for the sides of the rack. This will allow a tepui tent and bikes to be loaded.

The first 2/3 is pretty easy. The last 50 feet are the hardest.

Last year, I watched a local pedal UP the drop in
