I run the TRD catback. You can hear the softest crinkle (not even crackle) downshifting if you’re looking for it. Grumble sounds ok at low rpm, mid range under load is louder and at redline it’s almost silent, you hear the motor more. No drone while cruising though.

I ran it no exhaust when I did the install and honestly wish the crackling I heard then wasn't so muffled by the new exhaust. Here’s the video for shits and giggles.

Same here, but I cut ahead of the axle:

    IMG_20190227_170427.jpg

I tried expanding one of the cut off bends to clamp on, but the HF expander was useless. A local shop did the deed for me. I just wish it was a mandrel bend.

It gives a bit of a nice rumble, but no drone. I will get an air rushing sound when deep in the throttle at higher RPMs with the slider opened.

Any issues with exhaust dumping close to the cabin?

Nope. I really like it and drive with the slider opened any time that it is not raining.

My wishes for a cat back are on hold. I just need to deal with the crossover someday.

I did wait until I could get another stock exhaust in case it was a failure. For now, it lives in the crawl space. I couldn't be happier.

I’ve had mine on for two years. No issues for me. I live in Montana, and I have it in four wheel drive during the winter months. I don’t pull anything, so I don’t really need all the torque. IMO, I really haven’t noticed much of a change.

Went to a few reputable local exhaust shops and they said it doesn't matter. All the back pressure the engine needs is at the cats

Not saying anyone who disagrees is wrong, but in my case there was a noticeable loss at lower RPMs with both exhausts I had. More so with the 3" Magnaflow, at least with that one there was a noticeable increase up top.

@tonered and i had this discussion at some point, and i have two different things to say about a pre axle exhaust dump:
    1) it will, depending on your exhaust setup, likely resonate at a pretty big low wash of standing waves, because the space under your bed is effectively a resonator. how it resonates depends on the details of your system. mine was so bad i HAD to add a tailpipe since this is my DD.
    2) you can suck up exhaust gases into the rear glass especially in slow traffic with low air flow. in hot Texas summers with open windows in a traffic jam, this definitely did not work for me.

So a good middle ground would be post axle dump with the pipe exit facing the ground?

haven't tried that exactly, mine was pre. if that doesn't fly you can add a tailpipe easily.

Will you gain power, Yes. Albeit, an exhaust system alone wont be enough to feel any power in this heavy mid-size truck. Stick with a 2.5 as IIRC our Tacoma have a 2 1/4 piping. 3" would net you lost in power unless you plan on building that motor with OV twin turbo kit (when available) :D

I won't be buying another Magnaflow product. The one on my 1st gen rusted to shit after a year and the fitment was trash from day one.

    Definitely good info and discussion.

I wonder if there is a difference between LBs and SBs for some of this?

I get a rumble at idle that wasn't there before, but only when I am in a garage or near a wall to reverberate. I also get a slight bit of resonance that comes as just a bit more rumble at about 1,500rpm. These are mainly heard with the slider opened. It honestly sounds like a V8 rumble than anything tinny or a drone. I am on the stock muffler that I believe makes an S turn on the inside, sort of like the chambers in stock motorcycle cans. I don't like it but am happy enough to not care any longer.

I wouldn't put my nose up against an expert, but I do sniff stuff out pretty well and know that my bike runs a wee bit rich (I am getting 40mpg minimum, so IDGAF :bikewheelie: ). I have no problem with fumes in the Taco. I will get way more smells from peeps smoking in front of me, diesels, and old pony cars. We did get a CO monitor for our furnace. I might take it for a ride some day to confirm.

One thing the exhaust shop that made the tip said was that if there is no turn down tip, fumes can get in the slider. I am not sure on all the hows or whys there other than exhaust directed upward by the axle might flow forward along the bottom of the bed?

Honestly, the only negative that I saw was from some folks that have bad winters. They had layers of ice build up on the axle and brake lines due to the exhaust. This is another reason that I am glad that I sourced a spare. I don't see us moving away from here, but . . .

Piping measured 2.5" when we cut the old muffler out to install the Flowmaster. I believe it's 2.25" at the Y pipe.

    It's a V6 truck. I don't know what you're trying to achieve here, but a V6 exhaust isn't something I'd want amplified.

Interesting, maybe I just wasn't used to the stock low end, got mbrp quite quick. Now we need a scientific test! 2 exact tacos, 1 with aftermarket 1 stock. :)

    @St.Germain .

I made some quick vids for audio. The first two are just the slider open. The last one has all windows opened.

I’ve found it sounds “meaner” after the chop... did you notice any difference? Mostly during hard acceleration. I dig it.
