How about if he’s keeping the TRD tune.....a 2.7, 255 fuel pump, and a new appropriate size belt?

You and I are always thinking this way. I now have moved past you, but generally we’re a bit more conservative. We remember Holley and power valves.

You're in good company, Juan, but I'm starting to lean toward an HP Tuner (and maybe a 2.5" pulley). These threads are killing my disposable income!

I know the feeling. I have not looked much if at all on the hptuner. For now, I’m satisfied with the ovtune and future updates it may bring. The 2.7 is still on my radar too.

2014 Tacoma, auto. Just looking to gain a few more horsepower since I have everything off.

Where would you guys recommend buying these parts from? I looked at the link for the HP tuner but didn't see where I can buy it.

Give me a while and I can direct you the right way.

Otherwise I'm sure some of the guys in here will chime in if I can't get to you within the next two or three hours.

Amazon has a lot of these parts though and I have posted immediate links for them in the original post and there are also links to the parts in the "Products discussed in" portion at the bottom of each page.

You mean upwards of 40% excess fuel dump in various throttle situation conservative? ;)

Because that is how much the stock TRD Tune dumps at any given time if not more for some! Lol. The HPTuners is a must even if you are OE 3.0 pulley because of the fuel savings you'll gain just from getting properly tuned alone. Between 4-5 mpg additional in mixed city highway/ instances.

So getting back to you here. First off you need to decide which size pulley you want. If you want anything above 2.8 I can't help you in getting a qwikchange. Well actually you would have to request a custom size from either Nate @ Smoothflow or PulleyBoys out of Washington. Nate is more reasonably priced.

If you are wanting to step down pulley sizes Its my extreme recommendation you get yourself a good fuel pump. I personally recommend AEM 50-1200 320lph green top as it is E85 capable or you can do an Aeromotive stealth 340lph... both will provide you enough fueling for any mod you install here on after. The oe fuel pump will not be up to par I promise you.

You can find the pump on Amazon but if you are stepping down to pulley sizes 2.7 and under you will at least need a Ratiotek shift kit otherwise you will fry the tranny shortly. That should be available on Amazon as well. I recommend the gates fleetrunner green serpentine belts depending what size pulley you get. Those are available on Amazon and I have appropriate sizes required based on pulley size in my first post. Lastly.. I recommend HPTuners as a whole for any pulley size. The fuel savings alone are worth the expense. The MPVI2 module and an economy laptop will be all you need to get dialed in and proper. I can direct you if and when you are ready as to what else you need to do from there. You will require 4 credits to tinker with the trucks tune and you can purchase a universal MPVI2 module with 4 preloaded credits right off Amazon as well. You are in California though so I recommend you buying it off Ebay. Amazon will not sell to CA residents.

I don't have links for you for any of this but it is easy to find. That should get you set up well and keep you happy for a while.

So with the hptuner is there anything protecting you if your fuel pump just dies in the middle of wot?

Nothing can stop your fuel pump from dying in the middle of WOT. Ever. If your fuel pump is on the fritz anyways it will die well before WOT.

All the factory fail-safes are in place with HPTuners.

On the tunes that I do, I leave the factory knock correction and other failsafes in-tact. Unless there's a need to remove or recalibrate those features you'd be just as safe as you would with the factory TRD tune or N/A tune (if your a poor N/A soul like me).

    Ok so a few questions:

What is a good pulley size to upgrade to? I am not looking for crazy amounts of power, just more umph.

Second, do I need to find a tuner for this HPtuner or is it self tuning? Not very educated when it comes to that stuff.

It alone just offers the capability to adjust. If you're not capable, you'd need to find someone to map it.

Pulley size is up to you really. I personally found a little more umph with a 2.8 coupled with either the AFe or the URD intake, but it ultimately falls upon you as to what is exactly the "umph" you speak of.

However, if you get a good intake, with the pulley and THEN get it HPTuned it is my belief that you will be absolutely happy both with the boost output levels 7.5 - 8.5 psi peak and both the new fuel economy and drivability of it.

Once you buy the tuner it will require a little bit of leg work on your end, however, my buddy here @JustDSM is our resident HPT wizard and supercharger tuning guru. I'm sure he'd be happy to set you up with a tune you will both be happy with and will be solid and reliable for the life of the truck. He may charge you at most $50 honestly. We are currently in the beta stages of tuning and testing and so far the results have been more than positive and the beauty of it all is that it is incredibly easy to rewrite a tune over an old one if there improvements to be had. (Let me know if I'm ever overstepping my boundaries here Justin! I know life is busy so I don't want to overcommit you)

I very much appreciate the recommendation and would be happy to continue to support those interested whether or not they have the supercharger. And for the time invested in developing the maps and spending the time with you after to get a mapping solution truly dialed in for your specific truck and modifications, I do indeed ask for $50 donation. It's my priority that you're truck is running the best it can, thus I like to spend a little bit of time reviewing the datalogs and refining the baseline calibrations to make a vehicle specific product.
