Was wondering how members like their new TRD or trucks. Currently have 2003 4wd xtracab bought new and not sure if I like the new ones or not. I like all the new gadgets though

They are nearly universally well liked. As with most Toyotas, people buy them and keep them.

I don't personally like the size and styling of them, but they are objectively "nicer" in a lot of ways. When I bought my '04, I could have gone and gotten an 05 brand new, but I preferred the older/smaller body style. Coming from an 86 4Runner, even the Tacoma took me a while to warm up to the size, lol. I'm not a tall person, so I fit perfectly well in a 1st gen, where some taller folks would definitely feel cramped. As a family of 4, we never felt cramped in the doublecab even on 2500 mile trips.

Nearly 2 years ago I bought a '17 SR5 4Runner, and I really like it as a daily driver/road trip machine. It is definitely quieter, smoother, and has more power to tow my travel trailer on long hauls. It's much bigger too (inside and out), which really just means my wife can bring larger bags of snacks to throw at the kids, the kids can bring more stuffed animals with them, and it's a little harder to park in tight spacers. More cup holders, too.

As an off-road oriented rig, I think the new trucks are inferior to the older trucks in some ways, if only because of things like plastic bumpers. I have a whole diatribe on electronic gadgets about how they are cool, but ultimately only serve to give inexperienced drivers a false sense of security. The locker in my truck does the same thing, however. None of those things make you a better or safer driver.

So I kinda got the best of both worlds, I got the shiny new rig with some gadgets, but I kept the 1st gen as my trail truck. If I had to sell one of them, it would be the 4Runner without hesitation.

I never owned a 1st gen but did have a T100 XtraCab which had the same drivetrain and XtrCab layout. I’ve now had a 3rd gen TRD OR for about 61K miles. I have a DCSB so I really like the improved access to the back of the cab. It also feels much faster, if you rev it, and gets slightly better gas mileage. The OR gadgets work well off road, and the truck is more comfortable and feels safer (more airbags, ABS, plus better brakes and handling for active accident avoidance). But I’d probably be very happy with a 1st gen DCSB if I could still buy a new one. The exterior plastic on the 3rd gen is annoying.

Coming from a 2006 and 2011, I'm a fan of my 2017. Bought it new, have about 50k on it. I do spend a lot of time off maintained roads. It's treated me real well.

Well I bought a silver sky 19 TRD off road. The longer I have it the more I like it. It was just hard after having the2003 silver 4wd for 15 years, that I took excellent care of. Now I get to buy the goodies that I see. So many neat things to buy. I would include pics but don't know how. Thanks
