Both, both have pros and cons. I think on of those self inflating pads would be better tho

 

I think we'll be looking at sleeping pads or something, possibly cots. not sure yet.

air mattress on cold ground will deflate itself as the pressure changes, so that's never fun...plus packing air mattresses back up is a PITA.

 

Smitty has smaller poles and less matress thickness

 

I've got a sleeping pad and they're great for backpacking because you get some comfort and hardly any weight. But if I'm in a truck, I can stand to carry a little more weight.

 

Cots are uncomfy and air mattresses are a pita. Soooo buy a rtt like scottys or marks

 

I like the smitty xl. Its plenty big, im just worried about its longevity

Depends on who you are I guess. I prefer my Army cot over most things when sleeping away from my bed.

I was amazed at how easy it is to roll up My Coleman air mattress

 

Mine definitely has the potential to be. When they're newer, you have to stretch the canvas out as tight as a drum. Once they're worn in a bit and start to sag a little, its much better.

 

I saw some folks do that, but complain about the extra packing they have to do with the space those take up.

I'm a stomach sleeper so hammock sleeping is out 100%

 

Haha. My wife and I slept in my doublenest in the cold once. No underquilt, just both of us in a queen size sleeping bag.

Probably the most miserable either of us have ever been.

 

I love having a RTT.......

5 straight nights of camping across 4 states. Definitely the best way to do trips like that.

 

I've got some of those in my gym area I might try out when we get into a ground tent. I know I saw some videos of people that use rugs as floor insulation too and I liked that idea a lot.

 

for you. not for everyone though.

Definitely cool when camping in one spot for multiple days.

 

it's less setup time than any RTT. You still have to keep your bedding/cooking/utility stuff packed somewhere and then set it all up when you have an RTT.

the tent itself also takes less time to pack away than an RTT.
