That depends on whether you have a 16" or 17" rim. For 17" tires all the manufacturer websites for the 255/80R17s say 8.5" is the max. For 16" 255/85 R16 8" is the max.

The slightly taller sidewall probably changes the angles slightly. Academic at that point I think.

I have 255/85r16 on 8" wide wheels and I think you could go 8.5 or 9, but your rim protection from the sidewall would be non existent.

And you might lose a bead easier aired down. I wouldn't know, I never air down past 18psi or so.

How many miles of tread life did you ( anyone on this thread) get from their tires?

An unusually high amount of pinstriping.
Running the BFG km2. So far sitting at 42K ish with about 25% tread. I have to admit that I'm getting better mileage out of them then I thought I would.

I think I have around 30k on my KM2s with 40% tread left. I take them off for winter so I don't have an accurate mileage for them.

    Yep

I’m running 255/85/16 Cooper ST Maxx and they’re great. E-load is noticeable less cusiony than C-load but not a deal breaker. I haven’t been fully-stuffed off road yet but no rubbing so far.

I am running falken 255/80r17 right now on scs's and have 17000+ mi on them now. Best tire by far I've ran in 255. I live in the mountains and daily drive my truck as well, the cooper st maxx were great for traction in all circumstances but wore terribly and were very loud which doesn't really bother me but did everyone else. mpgs are relatively similar. I am mostly in dirt/rock/mud and the falken's are just as good as the st maxx in my opinion without the terrible wear. I have tc uca's and was in spec with both brands/tires the entire time as well. running icon 2.5 coilovers up front. Dakar hd's in rear icon ext travel rear resvrs. I am a falken fan now. Didn't expect it but also wasn't going to buy another st maxx. :crapstorm:

edit: falken wildpeak at3w e rated

What kind of wear were you getting with the Coopers?

Uneven wear. Middles wear faster like always but i got a ton of cupping as well. This was my second set of st maxx on a Tacoma also. Both did the same. Also ran them on a 2500 dodge and it was worse. I gave them the best chance I could and literally ran them at so many different psi that I almost went crazy. Chalk tested them 3-4 times. I kept thinking I could fix it but I never did. I bought them because the traction is excellent but now that I have found falken So far I prefer them. I ran my falkens for 2300 miles before I re aligned the truck after switching coilovers. No abnormal wear to speak of. It wasn’t out super far but it impressed me. The traction of the maxx is better in mud for sure but I will sacrifice that for the other advantages ive found with the falken. I originally bought these to wait for the km3 to be made in a 255 but now Im keeping them. Just my 2c

Edit: also pulled hard to the right after about 50% tread wear. Multiple alignment checks. Just made me crazy

ok that's good to know. I just slapped on a set of 255/85/16s a couple weeks ago haha. Sounds like you did you due diligence with the chalk tests too. I'll have to keep an eye on mine.

I've also seen on the ST Maxx thread that a solid chunk of guys get that pull to the right.......I don't have it....wonder if the accelerated wear is related? I'll report back if I discover anything on my set.
