There are two good reasons for celebrating Columbus Day. First, remembering that Columbus kinda discovered the New World and second, it gives us Federal Employees a day off!!:bananadance:

A bunch of the more liberal profs at my college protested Columbus Day last year. We in the engineering building just made fun of them all day and continued on doing work, not complaining and writing poems.

They were crying about the atrocities Columbus commited against the indigenous peoples of the Americas and the diseases his crew exposed them to.

But I am at work on this gorgeous day, wishing I could be riding my motorcycle. :(

yes i took an AP class and learned it. i had no idea untill that class. i didnt know that he sold them as slaves and killed them for sport and such. so the day we celebrate as a holiday, others might think of it as a mass genocide.

Everyone knows government employees don't do any work. They just pretend and get paid for it. :D:rofl:

    Ouch!!:p
Actually the Vikings were the first Europeans to discover the New World.
We could go one for hours about what the Europeans did to the Native Americans. It is a shame that it happened and there is nothing that will change it.
I am enjoying my day off!:D

"Yesterday was Columbus Day. I did nothing remarkable to recognize its passing except to point out to a few people that I still had to go to work. I can't figure out Columbus Day. By now I think most people would agreed that ol' Christopher Columbus didn't actually discover North America, even though he did land in the Bahamas and declare that, "India's lovely this time of year." The country was already inhabited by Americans, though they lacked a decent homeland security program that proved especially unprepared to deal with imported biological pathogens. What's bizarre to me is that the Columbus myth is still told in grade schools. It's almost like a conspiracy to perpetuate this story that Columbus set out to find the new world, but with any conspiracy theory, you need to have a group of people who would stand to benefit by convincing the masses that their version of history is correct. The thing with Columbus is that I don't think anyone's advocating for him anymore. The Knights of Columbus don't seem too active, so I'd say that we can finally drop the whole, "Columbus found America" thing. That said, I guess we can give the guy some respect for sailing over the edge of the world known among Europeans. He was probably a real wacko."
