Dreaded oil pan leak on 4x4

I have an oil leak on my 95.5 4x4 3.4 Taco. Under carriage is super clean all around except the pan. It is rusted and oil is leaking from the middle of the pan. I think the OEM pan is around $150. Are there any bolts I should change or something else while it's apart when I get this done? Thanks

Also, labor time and cost should be????????

 

My Toyota tech told me 4-5 hours and $400-$450, but he just moved. My other two guys told me the book called for 10 hours labor...one wants $900 and the other unknown as of now.

 

I don't know about the 3.4, but the 2.7 can leak from the valve cover gasket down the back of the engine and drip from the oil pan. Worth a look at least.

 

99% oil pan. OEM valve cover gaskets were replaced 12 months ago. Completely dry top and sides

 

Damn. Well good luck then. I heard replacing the oil pan gasket on a 4x4 can be tough.

212K....there are a couple ways of doing it I believe

 

Good call on the pick up tube, cheap insurance. Although they can be cleaned with some heavy solvents its typically not worth it.

 

It's not that hard to replace the pan in itself, but the hardest part is that you have to remove the front differential in order to be able to remove the oil pan. No need to lift the engine though, just remove the front diff

If you have a shop do it, they will charge you some extra $$$ because they have to remove the diff, but if you do the repair yourself, you'll save a bunch. As I said, it's not that hard, but the tricky part is the differential

 

What would be a fair labor price? I keep hearing 4-5 time wise to complete

 

the labor might be some food and drinks if there are TW members in your locale or within reasonable driving distance that may have done this before and have you and your trucks best interests at heart to do the job right

my truck is in need of some 'pricey' preventive work done and I have not yet found a local shop I can trust with my trucks life and shell out more than $1k to get it done properly to put my mind at ease. I am willing to drive at least a day to get it done

 

One part of PA (Great Bend) is 15 minutes from me

This week I had to drop and reinstall the oil pan on my 99 model 2WD. Long story but I got ripped off by a local shop, that came highly recommended, for $590 in labor to perform a main bearing and value inspection. So when I got home, my neighbor buddy came over and pulled the oil pan and found:

1) Two cross-threaded bolts at the front of the pan in the area where the wiring harness runs across the front of the pan.

2) PTFE/RTV smeared all on the windage plate.

3) They did not remove the oil pump tube. If they did, it still had the original gasket when I removed it.

4) They did remove the valve cover. However, when they reinstalled the gasket, they did not clean the head mating surface. The spark plug tube seals were installed upside down. One of the VC bolts had been cross-threaded with two missing the rubber grommets.

The shop's lead technician has a 4Runner. From that, I learned that 3.4L ownership doesn't make for quality work.

If you can get some help with removing the differential, I think you can give the job the care and quality that it deserves.

 

that is just as bad as finding out that a Toyota dealer mechanic (the one you would think to do a complete job) ripped off with a half-assed incomplete job!

 

I cannot tell you what a fair price would be as I do all my wrenching. I do not trust shops and garages anymore after they forgot to retighten the lug nuts on my worktruck twice afew years ago... also, I see enough half-assed jobs at work to think that if you want a job done right, do it yourself. Too much lazy asses out there...
