FROM MY UNDERSTANDING (CORRECT ME IF IM WRORG): Beadlocks are not DOT approved due to testing required by DOT agency is prohibitively expensive. not to mentiong its an exteremly gray area, as there are still OLDER semi's with split rims out there.. as far as I know split rims are illegal for any type of over the road transport (but still in use in other countries).. the SAE testing is for strength and durability of the rim in 3 different tests stressing the bead holding rim edge, the spokes, and the hub, by placing loads/stress to fatigue, and weaken the material until failure. My only concern with having a beadlock is 1 balancing (using either balance beads, or using stick on weights)

So has anybody figured out what the top speed will be with 35s and 5.29s? Mat @OVTune says people have hit the governor with 5.29s, all though nobody else mentions much about it here.

Just got my 35s and lift on, still can’t decide between 4.88s and 5.29s. Want whats best for gear hunting on the highway and overall mpg.

It is mentioned in here a few pages back. Only one or two people have mentioned about it but everyone else is fine from what I read.

I wonder what the actual issue is with these few...I don’t want to hit a governor trying to pass someone on the highway. I know 4.88 would be safe, but I only want to do gears once. Either 4.88 or 5.29 will be much better than stock, but which is best?

I am not sure if I have heard anyone actually having an issue (e.g., attempting to speed up and being actually limited/governed) or people just speculating wildly about it.

Go with whatever makes the most sense for what you are doing. I am on 5.29s with 35s, steel armor, RTT, LT. If you aren't as heavy, you might be able to get away with 4.88s. Maybe not. In terms of off-road capabilities, both will perform similarly enough for the majority of folks out there.

I don't think there is any reason to be concerned. I can get some radar speed readings soon, just been busy at work. I really don't think you will be approaching speeds that 5.29s + 35s can't keep up with.

For reference, I drive 51.7 miles to work, 48.3 of them on interstate.

I could be wrong but I haven't seen any actual data that suggests that there is an issue with regearing + tire size change and speed governing. If there is actual information and not anecdotal claims, I welcome them.

Yes, you are wrong. If you are concerned about the legality of offroad parts then don't put any on your truck. If you haven't noticed, most offroad parts come with a "For Offroad Use Only" warning, so if you have a part failure on the road and another vehicle or person is damaged/injured you will be liable, not the manufacturer.

I have no question about the liability of offroad parts onroad, just concerned about tickets for non-DOT approved items.. as states have their own ideas of whats legal or not.. such as my state will not allow any type of blue flashing, or strobing lights,, whites are permitted, but plow trucks are to have amber, while fire/ems have white/red, and police only are to have white and blue... and the light source (bulb) cannot be visible for accent lighting (underbody (ground effects/rock lights)) you can get a hefty fine for colored flashing lights...

    This was answered earlier.

As far as your balancing concern as you mentioned earlier. Beadlocks are easy to balance. The tire plays a bigger factor in that imho.

Awesome info. May try this if I go bigger tires. Running 33s now. Looking at 34s on 17in wheels.

Question: Is it really necessary to regear for 33s or 34s? I out in 33s at the moment, and don’t really see the need for regearing. It would be helpful, sure, but encessary?

I would consider re-gearing anything past a 32" tire.. you lose a bit of low speed crawling ability, and control. unless you have an automatic then the torque multiplication of the automatic comes in and mitigates some of it... but will ultimately affect power, passing ability at speed on highway, and engine RPM.. re-gearing takes stress off the transmission, and transfer case..

while you can run stock gearing on 33" or bigger its good idea for longevity of the transmission and t-case wear components.

also if you add any weight to the bed, armor, winch etc.. you will appreciate the lower gearing

    Needed? no
    helpful....absolutely.
I don't think anyone that regeared said that they regretted it or would go back to stock gears if they could
