e brake stuck?!?!

alright so i washed the truck today and pulled it in the street, pulled e brake up than maybe a half hour later i went to run to 711 and took the ebrake off put it in gear and it wouldn't move, i revved it up pretty good to and it didn't budge the tire wasn't even spinning i didn't want to burn the clutch to bad so i stopped. i even tried keeping it out of gear and trying to push it and it seems like something is stopping it from moving, again the ebrake was not on.

anyone have any ideas what might be causing it ?

Sounds like either:
- E-brake didn't disengage
- Main drum or caliper is stuck
- differential is seized.

Those would be my main contenders.

 

yeah i hope its not the diff, i was under it with a flash light, im going to take a better look at it tomorrow during the day

 

You can try jacking up the diff and try to turn each tire by hand. Make sure you chock the front wheels properly of course.

 

I've had the exact same thing happen a couple years back after washing the truck then letting it sit overnight. In the morning it wouldn't budge...finally after giving it some extra gas it broke free. It only happened that one time and I figured the brakes got rusted up or stuck...hasn't happened since. Let us know if you find out anything.

 

Sooo what if tacoma's had Discs' in the back instead of Drums' for brakes? Would that help reduce the chance of a stuck e-brake?

 

doesnt sound like e-brake. If you gave it quite a bit of gas i think the truck would still move a little. Sounds like something is stuck.

 

Ya got me... I'm not even sure if a stuck e-brake caused the problem.

i had it revved at 2 -3000 rpm the first time i reved it up it almost stalled

 

Mines done that a couple times. I just worked the brake peddle and it broke loose.

 

had it happen once(not my taco). i crawled under the truck and wiggled/pulled on the ebrake cable the whole length of the truck and it popped loose. Just make sure the ebrake is off and the truck is in gear. Id hate to hear you say you crawled under there and wiggled the cable but the truck wasnt in gear and it ran over you...

this happend to me at the boat ramp.. drums got wet and locked up.. put it in 4 wd and drug it up the ramp then started looking at it.. pulling the e brake in and out then was aggravated and shoved the e brake in hard and it disengauged.. hasnt done it since.. pretty sure its just from getting wet..

 

alright well i jacked up the rear and the right tire spun freely. it was only the left that had locked up. attempted getting the drum off and found the little adjuster in the back to be jammed up. after a while it loosened and i adjusted it so i could rotate it. still couldn't get the drum off, i read here to take a 8mm bolts and work them in to push the drum off but of coarse i had no 8mm bolts laying around. i threw the tire back on and it drives, i have to really hit the brake to feel anything engage, so im going to take it to toyota tomorrow and have them check it out

 

At least it's moving now and you know where the problem is. Hopefully the dealer won't rape you too much for it.

 

I had this happen to mine too, except it was during a rain storm and i drove through a foot and a half puddle in the supermarket parking lot...
my brakes seemed like they wouldnt work very well, after drying out a bit they worked fine
