i did oil change on my 02 TRD, to bond with my truck. fock!!! it was pain in the ass. 6 quarts and oil filter cost me $25 at toyota dealer, and i had to remove the front skid plates to get to oil filter 3.4L. next time, i will fork out $35 for toyota do the oil change. saving $10 wasn't worth it.

Go through the drivers side wheel well next time to get to the filter. Much easier.

I could be wrong (and probably am) but can't you get to the oil filter from the wheel well area on your year? Also... you bought the oil from the dealer? It's cheaper from an auto parts store or wallyworld. Don't give up...just find a better way next time. Doing it youself is the best way to know it's done right. There's been horror story after horror story on dealershhips and oil change places screwing things up...don't give them the chance!!

Yep, just attached with plastic clips. If you break a clip just go to the auto parts store and buy a few extras.

I remove my skidplate everytime I do an oil change too....I think its easier to get to from underneath compared to from the wheelwell.

I kinda wish I still had the stock skidplate....dropping the Budbuilt then bolting it back up sucks lol.

oh and if you ever switch to synthetic expect to pay a good bit more...my dad takes his car to jiffy lube and said that for me to get my truck done there it would cost over $100

yup, pretty easy to do, i do believe you can just use a flat screw driver to pull out the fastener. kinda check it out before you start prying on it though, just in case

as the others said, yes you can. Just use a flat screwdriver to pop them out. The filter will be right in front of you once that rubber flap thing is out of the way. I also drop the rear skid to keep the mess to a minimum since the filter spills oil everywhere.

I would just pay the extra $10 and don't worry about it.

I see why toyota changed where they put the oil filter. Oil changes on my 09 (V6) are so easy!

It isn't about saving money for me. Its about taking full responsibility. And, as others have mentioned, not giving some minimum wage earning kid a chance to mess things up.

Besides, what better way to spend a Saturday afternoon and bond with your truck.

Just did my oil today on my 2000 2.7L Tacoma pre-runner every time I get the filter off I always spill oil on my skid plate. Is there any Tips or Tricks to prevent this besides removing the plate or (What I've been doing) put a rag under the filter.

    Good tip.

I just reach down from the top of the engine to take it off and replace it.

DIY is the way to go. Go read the stories in 2nd about dealers and quick change places. I always change my oil/filter on the gravel so a few drops of spilled oil does not bother me.
