I’m gonna play devils advocate. My first truck was a 1990 manual Nissan truck. I put 85,000 miles on that truck. My next was a 1998 Toyota T100. Currently over 700,000 miles on it, over half of those are mine (my daily driver). My current truck is a 2007 Taco. Currently over 265,000 miles on it. That’s a lot of miles using a manual transmission.

It’s great. I’d still get my Taco. But, sometimes, for real, it’s nice to drive an automatic transmission. Like, the greatest thing in the world. Just imagining an ocean of city-wide, rush hour brake lights makes me cringe a little knowing how many times I’ve had to shift along for hours.

Man... you’re the guy who needs a new truck, not because you current ones are high (extremely) mileage, but I just feel like you “deserve” a NEW truck for being so practical..!

Haha, I appreciate it. The first two were hand-me-downs. I was 7 when my Dad got the Nissan, and the T100 just won’t quit. It’s probably the cheapest vehicle in the world to insure. Can’t afford to let it go till I hit the lottery. Or, one day it’ll just be a third generational truck. My poor not-yet-born-future-kids.

Nope applies to both the $0 loss concept and trying to change your mind.

Seems logical, but unfortunately easy to disprove. ;)

It's really not that hard to drive a MT in traffic. I do it all the time. The secret is not to drive it like an AT. Don't rush up and stop/brake constantly. Just let it float in 1st or 2nd and creep along. Sure a person or two might jump into the gap in front of you, but really it's not like it is making you later or anything. Doing that I very minimally have to touch the clutch.

The only thing that will make the AT better in traffic is when they introduce full adaptive cruise control that actually functions in bumper to bumper traffic, with full stop/start ability. That won't come to the Tacoma probably until the next re-design though, so shouldn't affect any decisions in the near term.

I wish I went MT, do it. I thought 6ft double cab was more important to me. Really wish i went 6 speed short bed, or even better Access cab. On the other hand I love my DCLB and the auto isn't really that bad once you get onto it, but you shouldnt have to get onto it. It is a fair drivetrain, Toyota is more than capable of producing something better in my opinion. Go MT.

With some many jonesing over a MT, I wonder why they are difficult to find.

I'd like one but when I consider 99% of my driving is in town my left leg starts hurting just thinking about it.

Just make sure manual is something you actually want to drive everyday, and not just something you had fun with in a test drive.

My '96 that I've been driving since new has a manual, but loving my '18 TRD Sport with auto. I like both, don't understand the AT 'hater' thing. Same thing over on the C7 Corvette forum.

Driving a manual in traffic isn’t that big of a deal. If you are any good, you aren’t thinking about it anyway, you are just driving. I’ve spent plenty of time driving through rush hour in Chicago and other big cities.

Such a weak argument for an auto.

I bought an auto for the traffic. I've had a clutch and they are fun to drive. Traffic isn't fun

Oh and just to add the auto has such great passing speed that I completely ignore the whiners. Drive it like you stole it

False. This thing really drives great in traffic. 1st and 2nd are both are excellent for crawling at different slow traffic speeds. Something about this motor seems to allow a wide rpm range for each gear (does Atkinson cycle prevent stalling at low rpms somehow, engineers?) Also clutch is smooth and not too heavy, so even true stop and go traffic is nothing like it was back in the day with my 80s Ford with its big ass heavy clutch travel. (Seriously, it was like a 3 part journey to get that thing to the floor)
