just installed a new hitch

but i have one question, what wiring do i need to buy to set up for a four prong trailer, and also where do i plug this in? do i need to splice wires? TIA

 

Does your truck have any trailer wiring at all? If not, you need to get power from the tail lights and the amber turn signals, then get a 5 to 4 converter box so the separate amber turn signals on the truck power the turn signals for the trailer since it uses the actual tail light.

You will have one wire from each amber light, one for brakes (can come from either light on the truck), one for tail (can also come from either light), and one ground going into the box. Then you will have left and right turn, tail, and ground coming out to the 4 prong plug.

Basically you buy a $30kit from autozone, and it's plug and play. Just have to remove tail lights to install and no splices.

 

or that haha. I just converted my 4 prong to a 5 prong to have brakes and had to redo all the wiring because the uhaul retards that did it originally are retarded. They had nothing but scotch blocks for the splices and half of them were not getting a good connection.

 

well my truck was never setup for towing, does that mean i need to do splicing? or do all tacomas have the same wiring harness and i can just buy the kit and plug it in and run the wires?

Just go to Auto Zone, go to the towing section and you will see a bunch of packages that have the wiring all ready to go. Find your year/model truck, and you take the tail light out and plug the trailer wiring into it.

 

x2, plug and play kits are the way to go for a 4-prong. no need to slipce wires unless you are looking for a weekend project.

 

X2... I've already had one of their convertor boxes fry and another may have. I gotta go with something else this time

 

You need a wiring harness. It will run you from $30-$60. They are easy to install. They come with simple instructions. Best to get the plug n play kit. Not the one you have to splice wires. I have installed 3 of these in 2 Tacomas. Takes less than 30minutes. Biggest hassle is removing your tail lights to plug the wire into them.

so i went to autozone and found the right kit for my truck. i literally takes about twenty minutes to install, the longest part was drilling the hole for the ground. thanks for the help guys
