A stock vehicle wont "ping", or knock on stock engine with no forced induction, no matter if you run low grade

Why are we talking about octane again? We should be talking about gas without ethanol you get better mileage performance etc, and it's better for the enviroment!! Haha that's last part is for the greenies.

Very good thread....I have gone back and forth on 87 vs. 91 when I first bought my '09 V6 4x4 in late May of last year...ran 87 for a couple of months until the Valley of the Sun ran into triple digits...trying to accelerate with 87 while the AC is running full blast made my engine knock like crazy..switch to 91..problem solved...never noticed any real difference in mileage...avg about 17 to 19 in the city...for a few $$$ moreits worth the 91 and the Mobil1 Synthetic she receives.

Knocking is detonation, and I doubt any recent tacoma really knocks. Most ppl are prpbably hearing "the tick".

I've swapped back and forth from 87 to 91, and now 93 since it came available recently. 87 yields the best mileage for me, can't really say why. No difference in performance between the the three, so I just stick to 87.

I have been trending this as well, after 10 tanks of Shell 93 I was getting between 17 and 19 mpg then 10 tanks of Shell 87 I have been getting 19 to 21 mpg. I will be using 87 from now on, my truck runs just fine with it.

i've been running 87 for the short month that i've been driving my "aught-ten". performance is great but i traded in a 4-banger s-10 for my tacoma so anything is gonna pretty much sweep me off my feet.
i'm getting ready to take a drive from OKC to LA so here's what i'm planning:

i run 87 on the way out and 91 on the way back. i expect to not get quite the same octane levels at every gas station between here and cali but it should all work out close enough. hmm, i guess i'll even take pics of the odometer at fill ups for documentation purposes. the good news is that, while gas prices will consistently rise as i approach the west coast, i'll be buying the cheaper gas on that leg of the trip! this will all happen next month so no huge time frame.

hell, i just can't wait to be cruising the highways in my new coma. especially through the az mountains and then through the desert.

any advice on how to make this even slightly more scientific are welcome.

Those of us that live in higher elevations already have a slower burn rate because of the lack of oxygen (which is what higher octane does). Our regular gas is 85 and it works just fine. I do go up a few points when driving down to lower altitudes.

The big ripoff is that our gas in Utah is one of the more expensive yet lower octane and we have 3 refineries less than 20 miles away.

millions of posts in here about it.

    Search for ''tick''

A rev-dependent tick you can hear inside the cab with windows up and fan/radio off, while accelerating hard at low RPM (before the auto downshifts).

Really sound like a valve tick or detonation tick but I guess it is not since lot of ppl get it. I think it sounds like my old ford ranger exhaust leaking a little by the manifold.

There are a lot of hypothesys on the subject and origin of the sound, but I guess no one knows.

I think it's the manifold pipe design that creates some kind of gas collision and make the ''tick''...

And about 91 octane, I think it gives me better MPG, but my truck is new, so not enough data to prove something here.

i only use CHEVRON. since our trucks only require 87, i used 89. about every other month i'll put in a tank of 91. if i had to use any other fuel cause of an emergency, i'll flush it out with CHEVRON 91 when it gets to 1/4 tank.

    me too.
    - our premium in Minnesota is usually 92 and it is all blended 15 % ethanol unless you get the non-oxygenated collector car gas.

I know it's an old thread and everything, but the motor is designed for only 87, though obviously you can run anything above 87.

The manual states research octane 91. The AKI ratings (87,89,91,93) are measured by RON+MON/2 . RON being the Research Octane Number and MON being the Motor Octane Number. For 87 gasoline, RON is typically 91.
