Our first and last new black family car was a 1991 Mazda 626. We were just recently married and just joined the Navy. We loved that car but back then my cars had to be spotless 24/7. I swore after I traded it on a minivan (the soccer mom vehicle of choice in the 90s) that I’d never own another one. Keeping that thing looking good was a job, not just a chore!

I went back on my promise (sort of) when I bought my first child her first new car. All she wanted was a VW Jetta in black! That was back in 06 (we were literally kids when we had her) and she drove that car completely trouble free for 12 years, but that paint looked horrible by the time she and her husband finally sold it. We never spent a penny on repairs for that car but oh that paint....

I agree that a dark blue would be the color of choice for me and it’s still easier than black to maintain.

This guy has been advertising this car for sale on & off for probably 3-4 years now. I've seen it on the Maine Craigslist page for as low as $25k and as high as $50K. Ever since it got featured in Hemming's Motor News it hasn't dropped below $35k, though

I had a really dark blue VW Golf, it was damn near as bad as black to keep clean, MGM on the Tacoma is about as dark as i would want to deal with.

I have found the German paint to be incredibly thick and durable yet finicky at the same time. My current GTI is in need of a detail and I bought all the buffers and so on yet don’t have time to do it. We also don’t have any local shops that I’d trust on any of my cars. They are just terrible.

That Golf I had lasted 11 or 12 years before getting totaled in a hit and run, paint did seem to be pretty solid too.

The paint on my Audis was tough as nails. I’d never do it but you could run them through all the car washes in the world and never hurt them. I’m a huge GTI fan and think there is no better balanced car on the road for the money. Something about them makes me smile when I shut the door and take it for a spin - every time!

I have always had a soft spot for GTI's too dating back to 1983 when they came out! Do you remember this TV Commercial?

They are on the C&D top 10 literally every year. The most honest and well balanced car in the world for the money. It never gives you a false sense of security yet is always asking to be driven just a little harder. Ear to ear grins for me, even knowing they are quick yet not really fast.

Never seen one in person, Not sure what it was called other than M46, only available on base Barracuda and only 450 made toward the end of the year. Some convertibles out there too.

I too had a 91 Mazda 626. Loved that car. If I were to find a decent one I may snatch it up. Miss those oscilating center dash vents.
