Invite me to Italy sometime. We’ll lock the rear, hit the crawl control and show the locals what these Toyota mini-trucks can do.

Well you can always go back to the trusty ol 700R4. You’ll never have to service it but drive that for a few hundred 000s and the extra bloodletting at the pump could buy you several new Tacoma transmissions with money left to see the chiefs lose another almost super bowl

They are “overdrive” gears, meaning the ratio is less than 1. I don’t know what a classic old 4 speed auto out of a Chevy etc had for an overdrive ratio. Back in the day, I know “D” was 1:1 in most cars, with overdrive less than that.

Presumably, he works at one shop or dealership. So he hasn't seen every failed transmission on every Tacoma ever sold. So the failure ratio is against what is in his local area, not all the trucks Toyota ever sold. Now the real question is does he work at a dealer or an independent shop? If he works for a dealer, 30-50, sure maybe normalish relative to what a dealer can move in that time span. If an independent shop though, that means that he would only see the out of warranty trucks, and there aren't too many of those in the 3rd gen yet. That is probably more concerning. I have no dog here though, just thought I would point that out.

Maybe he lives in the towing capitol of the world?

Where I live, it seems every second truck is a 3G Tacoma. I spoke with my dealers mechanic and he said other than shift-point complaints (that we have all heard about ad nausea) they haven’t had a single blown 3G auto with about 500 of them on their service roster.

They don't manufacture a lot of the parts. You can't give Toyota (or any other car manufacturer) the credit for reliability on one hand, but then blame the individual supplier when things go wrong. Toyota specced the transmission, and chose the supplier, and is responsible for the quality of the parts that are delivered with the vehicle.

Aisin makes the best, most reliable automatic transmissions for passenger cars and trucks. They also make the manual transmission for the Tacoma. They are the premium option, and yes Toyota is a shareholder in the company.

Interesting discussion from OV tunes on 3rd gen trans mapping. https://www.ovtuned.com/blogs/news/...-transmission-and-how-we-are-fixing-it?page=2
May look into their programming. Had experience with wrx tuning but that stuff is so easy to install/remove for trips to the shop.
I had my 18 Sport for a week, when a nice older gentleman driving a ‘16 Sport walked up to me at gas station and said “watch your transmission... mine was replaced with 10k miles”. Not exactly happy-making, but anecdotal at that point. There are reports within the forum/s of failure, but yeah, all makes have issues for sure. Hard to find the hard numbers on this from any MFR to be sure.
Im not a “fanboy” but there is a reason I buy new Toyota trucks and SUVs over Fords and Chevys, which I also like personally. That reason is reliability.
I have actually had more problems with manuals than Auto equipped Toyotas.
We shall see how this goes. Not seling any time soon (but I say that alot...)

Gears 4-6 have 3 stages for torque converter.
What you think is a shift is not a gear change in most cases. The audible and whatever other feelings you experience is the torque converted locking/unlocking.
Also somewhere between 3 and 4 gears, engine's Atkinson cycle is producing the feeling of the shift.
    Get OBD app and observe.

I've had good experiences with extended car warranties. I've often regretted not buying them when a transmission fails just out of the standard warranty.

Anyone who’d actually like a little education on automatic transmissions, that isn’t just fluff, this is a really great video. This guy is one of the best automotive educators on Youtube. I’ve learned a lot from his vids.

This particular vid is on the 6 Speed Aisin out of a Tundra, but the concepts are all similar.

A “dry” watch, but interesting if you like nerding out a bit on a Saturday morning.
