    History is fascinating because it really is stranger than fiction.
    After all, a novelist has to be careful to at least make things plausible.
    And History is full of implausibilities.

    Tuchman is a little weak on checking sources.
    Example from The Guns of August:
    The Germans' Big Bertha howitzer didn't really have to be fired electrically from a pit a hundred yards away.
    Cuz it was so powerful...or something. :confused:
    That was a piece of wartime propaganda.
    She coulda cleared up that point by asking any artilleryman.


    Anyway, she's a good read.
    If you like Tuchman, try The March of Folly.
    Four scenarios from History illustrating the inveterate stupidity of mankind. :p
    Not forgetting womankind too. :)
