My buddy with a 93 wants to build a bed platform. Does that year model have the notches in the side of the bed for 2x6s like my 2nd gen does? He has a bed liner in there and he wants to know before removing the liner.

    no

    just sheet metal.

But what do you mean "notches for 2x6's"? Are you talking about the adjustable rails on 2nd gens?

    Thanks.
No, mine has places to set 2x6s in to carry plywood sheets. Makes for the perfect platform.

Oh I gotcha, you mean this, then (stolen from TW):

The answer is still no, though. 1st gen Tacomas and earlier pickups (like the '93) don't have that kind of thing. Most people just build a box

    Yep, exactly.
Oh well, we'll have to build it a little differently. Mine was so simple and easy to remove.
    Thanks.

If you're going to build a box, you should 100% put full length pull-out shelves in it. Make it so the main structure can just be pulled straight out (i.e. build it between the fenders). Heavier, but still "easy" to remove. Then use some piano hinges + extra board material to cover the area around the fenders but it can still be flipped up to access to the sides and for easy removal.

You can tell I've thought about this before...

The factory 1st gen bed liners have vertical notches.

His isn't a factory liner. We're probably going to pull the liner and build out a platform and storage.

Oooo any chance I get to share pics of this baby the better

Actually i went to Home Depot and bought wood to build a platform and same day I check craigslist randomly and found this bed platform for $200 in really good condition so I picked it up..

Apparently there was a company down in so cal that made a lot of these things back in the 90s? Early 00s maybe. But have since stopped producing them I take it.

Thought about building some since I got all the dimensions, maybe people would buy them on here who knows

    Here’s mine

Actually the only part I did was the 8x4 plywood with the leather straps lol.. though about doing a rolling system n all but just wanted to keep it simple

I'd suggest using the liner if you can.. these 1st gen Tacoma bed floors are pretty flimsy. My original Tacoma didn't have a bedliner.. I weigh in at 170 lbs and thought I was going to fall through it the first time I walked on the bed floor.

I only mention it because you may destroy the existing bedliner getting it out... at which point you won't have the option any more.

Post up some photo's once you get the platform built... I'm curious about building one myself.

Will have to take another good look at it before pulling it. It's cracked in places and pulling away from the sides. Might try to convince him to get the spray in liner done.

Here's what I did with mine.

this platform works well for me but, i want to redo the back so its not all the same height its hard to hang out in when its bad weather kind of coffin-y. The single bed on on one side or the adjustable middle platform with side storage is what im looking at doing next. the full length drawers are nice while camping/road tripping!

I'm also looking to do a build, but would like for it to be modular, so that I can convert it for 1 or 2 people on the fly.

I just did a roll on bedliner from rustoleum, I think it turned out great.
The professional spray in was too much $ for a 17 y.o. truck. Anyway you can look at the pictures and know what the sheet metal under the bedliner looks like.907E0465-8F08-484A-AE59-382637F04C12.jpg5D305320-322F-4327-8A6B-D95B8900E5A9.jpg ACB3F739-B912-470D-8198-1865F7BE9806.jpg

Thanks, that's very helpful. My idea at the moment is to make a frame shaped like a # out of planks notched together with a sheet of plywood ripped down the middle on top as the platform. My main goal is to have it be easily removable by one person.

A 93 is a Toyota Pickup and the bed is different from the 1st gen Tacoma bed, you're going to want to find pictures of an 88-95 bed.

Didn’t see the 93 in the OP.
Anyway (for anyone else reading this thread) the 1st gen has two little drain slots at the front of the bed so be aware moisture could possibly come up though them if you splashed in a deep enough puddle. I cut the top rim off my original bed liner and plan to use it with the camper top for that reason.
