I read up on what I could find online about the felt washers, and found nothing definitive about their mechanism of action. There was a lot of conjecture, but nothing I could feel comfortable about. Supposedly they are impregnated with something, but no one appeared to have the inside story on them. I just use this stuff.

I’d like to note something about the battery water levels. What’s important is keeping water over the tops of the lead plates, and keeping an even amount of electrolyte between the cells. If the plates get exposed to air they die off very quickly. It’s easiest to make sure they are level if you fill to the bottom of the fill holes. Also, losing/using water is a normal part of battery operation for non-sealed battery! This isn’t something Toyota did wrong.

 

quick problem here: so today i started my truck and let it run for like 5 mins, got in to leave, put it in reverse. Looked back to make sure i was clear and slowly let of the brake, well it felt like the hulk had just yanked me by the tow hitch. it made a noticeable clank and it was like i had floored it, what i did floor was the brake. anyone had this happen? dont know if i should have stealership look at it. working fine now so they might say: "Cant replicate problem".

 

at least it will be documented. or the tech may find something. if you think it's a stealership, do some homework and find a more reliable mechanic.

I added just over 12 ounces of distilled water to the battery after 3 years (in June) of use to get the water level to form a meniscus. I was surprised at how much water I had to add.

The only thing I would add to your post, is to make sure you do it once you know the battery is fully charged. Take it for a good drive and then check the levels. If you do this after the trucks been sitting for a few days, you may end up overfilling the fluid.

Need a part number for a 3rd gen. pcv please....the interwebs are all over the place on this one.

 

I have always used the washers along with battery terminal red gooey spray and have never had any corrosion on any of my battery terminals.

 

I had a u-bolt slightly under torque the first time I checked them, I think it's a known issue which is why checking them is recommended.

My question, is has anyone had their driveline bolts loose when they go to check them??

 

What do you guys recommend for doing the transfer case, the OEM is crazy expensive but will buy if I have to. I've seen some recommend the ravenol 75w MTF-3. I know that's what the guys with the manual transmission use, but is that fine to use on an automatic taco for the transfer case? Sorry a bit of a noob question but just wanted to be sure. I already did the front and rear diffs and plan on doing the transmission w/ oem fluid sometime in the near future.

 

Bite the bullet and do oem, did mine at 100k kms (60k miles) and it was pretty clean still, so don't be in too much of a rush.

decided to check tranny fluid and transfer case fluid this am. Truck built in Jan of 19. 2500 ish miles on it. Got trans up to temp, pulled check plug, nothing came out. Put in about 20 oz and drained back out 8 oz to a trickle so it was about 12 low. Transfer case was full.

 

Yep...good idea to check it on a new truck and when your under there wrenching on an oil change or whatever. Truck just had its 5k service and later I found 5 out of the 8 loose. One needed almost 3/4 turn before the torque wrench clicked.

 

I’m having serious doubts about my search foo. Can someone please confirm this part# 90430-A0003 for the fill and drain plug gaskets for a manual transmission 3.5L Taco. Just wanna make sure before ordering. Thanks.

 

I will go contrary to earlier posted advice and tell you that you don't need to replace them. Seriously, save your $8. The original ones will be totally fine to reuse.
