I may have tweaked a few things...
Anyone here have experience messing with FJ Cruiser front coilovers?

It occurred to me that the Toytec 112-620 coil springs I just removed could be the perfect leveling springs for my buddy’s FJCr. Since I’ve replaced my own a few times now I figured I should be able to help him swap them.

Looking at a couple of guides online the front ends are very similar. The main difference is having to support the hub after disconnecting the ball joint and protecting the CV boot. They don’t mention loosening the alignment cams but they do mention having to pry the LCA down low enough. I assume an alignment has to be done after swapping coils anyway so wouldn’t it be easier to loosen the cams the same way you would for doing the no compressor method on a Tacoma?

Not necessary to loosen the cams, you can put a bar wedged on the BJ bracket and force down.
    Yes support the hub/spindle.

Just try not to damage the BJ boot doing it, use a round bar.

    They’re the same. Easy swap.
Just do it the right way.
Pull the coilover, swap springs, reinstall.

Don’t fuck around with that unsafe bullshit way. You can get fucked up real quick doing shit like that. If you don’t have access to a spring compressor, any shop will do it for a minimal charge. Money well spent over potentially getting hurt.

    But you do you.

Just like Blake stated, dont change the coils on a coil over in this manner, just a install.

I may have tweaked a few things...
I appreciate the warning, but I’ve used this method several times on my own truck and have zero concerns. I was far more nervous the one time I mounted springs to shocks using spring compressors before the actual install.

As long as the lower shock bolt is in place nothing can even ‘pop out’ of place. Even if you drop the LCA too fast when releasing tension nothing can move out and hurt you. By the time the absorber rod drops below the top hat making any sort of movement possible there is no more tension on the spring.

To me the most dangerous part of this method is having the truck properly set up on jacks and for anyone who does even basic maintenance on their truck this should *not* be an issue. But as I said, I appreciate your concern. :hattip:
