I don't think I would use the people that came up with Sync as an example of clear and concise thinking

Rag on it all you want, but it works and sounds good. My 2018 Tacoma radio sounds no better than the one that was in my 2004. Toyota won't improve until the fanbois rag on them a little.

On my old 2015 Tacoma volume was up and down then they switched it to side to side for 2016.

Nope, don't buy it. The Toyota Corolla has the same volume/radio display, yet the buttons on the steering wheel are mapped with the volume up on top and volume down on bottom.

I'm on my first ever vehicle with steering wheel controls. I don't mind and if they ever change it, I will probably be confused if they make up/down for volume.
To be fair... My wife's Venza has steering wheel controls but I rarely drive her car.

Takes like 5 minutes driving a 3rd gen to get used to left/right vs up/down. Besides, my OCD would be giving me fits if the controls were up/down with the display being left/right. I actually think Toyota made the right call on this one.

I actually mentioned this in the questionnaire Toyota Corp sent me after I bought the truck 3 months ago. I believe they either over thought a few things or not at all. Hard to say which.

I only mind it when I drive my wife’s ‘17 Prius, which has the up/down volume control on the wheel and on the center console and visually marked on the touchscreen. I like that they are uniform in each vehicle, but I wish they were matched across the whole lineup.

This really fucks with me sometimes. I'll go to turn the volume up and switch to the next damn song instead.

Mimics how you'd turn the knob if you didn't have steering wheel controls.

I wish all the buttons light up. That’s my OCD. And my 2 cents. :)

I bet Jony Ive (Apple dude obsessed with symmetry) would go into convulsions sitting in or getting behind a Tacoma. One tail pipe Coming out the right side? One grab handle in the interior? Big ass flasher button? Some buttons light up, others don’t and etc.

I’m willing to bet there is a rule about the size of the hazard button. And they probably didn’t have room to move it up.
