If I take the battery out of my smart key fob, will it loose its memory and not work after some time? Will it need to be re-programmed?
How long can it be stored without the battery in it and retain the programming?

Pretty sure you could remove the battery for an extended time with no issue.

You could put the fob in battery saving mode. Press the unlock button twice while holding the lock button down. The 2032 battery is cheap and easy to change, so I just leave my extra fob on a table away from my garage.

Just swapped the battery in mine this AM as it died. Retained its memory no problem and the battery had been dead for a couple days.

Just used the second FOB until I had time to switch.

You could also turn off the transmitting of the remote by holding down the lock button and push the unlock button twice. The LED will bling twice, have a pause and blink 2 more times. That shuts off the transmission of signals and will keep your battery lasting longer or if you are placing it in a hide a key or leving it in your truck.

I had a 2011 4runner key that didn’t have a battery in it for 2-3 years and it was fine. I’m sure these are the same.

A couple of weeks ago I got in my truck and the center instrument cluster said key fob battery low. So your truck should detect the strength of the radio signal from the fob when the battery is close to dying.

Purely out of curiosity, why are you planning on storing the fob without the battery?

I figured it was a long shot but I have a key that will not program in Techstream because its programmed to another vehicle. I was trying to find out if it could eventually loose its programming so it can be re-programmed.
