Just a friendly reminder, still waiting to close 3 orders. Be sure to finalize (or get the deposit refunded) before Monday ... because that is when the metal chips will start flying.

So where do the shims go? Just on top of the threaded shaft? Cut them into small pieces?

Can this be disassembled to facilitate removal of shims that are jammed inside? :frusty:

I'm curious aboot something...how come MT knobs have the shift pattern etched in the knob, but AT folk have a shift pattern template in the console?

No AT guys wanna have the shift pattern on the knob? :notsure:

The AT shift pattern is literally 4” away from the shift knob. I have never seen a console mounted AT that didn’t have the same pattern.

I haven't had to perform such an operation yet. I'm guessing that you have a bit more up there than you desire to line up your pattern.

I would find a long pick, with pointy end. Sharp like needle sharp point, to try to fish out the shim of undesirability. Just dig in there like ear wax, dig it out

It seems like the shim is wedged in a way that the knob will not catch on the threads

How large is the shim that you interceded with?

Ya, you want to cut it to inside the outer diameter of the shift rod thread diameter. The shims are only there to properly orient the engraving if any. So it's a compression configuration.

Fish that on out and try again. There is a mathematical orientation to the colour of the shims. X degrees per shim depth

Rick or Tony will set my ass straight if I'm wrong

Which knob do you have? Taking it apart will be possible if it's a hybrid, but you may want to get some paper towels and prepare for a mess of anti seize lube.

    Definitely a hybrid then.

Remove the two bolts holding the retainer on. Set aside the retainer, but put the bolts back in about half to 3/4 if the way and use those to unscrew the core.

At that point the shims will be much easier to get out. First post has an exploded parts view to help show what is going on inside.
