Your assessment of the fees is spot on, assuming you'd like to start with the baseline calibration that I currently have and support to personalize it to your specific application and preference. The baseline calibration that I provide is a foundation to build on. For the donation, I make myself available to tailor it to your individual preferences, not locking you into a one-size-fits all solution. I'm available by phone/text/email/teamviewer to assist in anyway I can.

The baseline calibration primarily involves remap of the throttle, ignition tables, and fueling corrections. That's just the baseline, and with the improvements in these addressed areas, you'll notice a much different behavior from the truck. Should you want to adjust from there it can be tailored it to your specific needs/wants and the sky is the limit. I like to open a dialog with folks and discuss their needs and concerns while working with them to come up with specific solutions to the areas they'd like to address.

In short, it doesn't end with the baseline calibration if you want to take it further.

Fuel pressure gauges should not be necessary.. I am never against more data displays of vitals so if you want to add it, do so!

I love Hinson, I used to buy stuff from them back when I had my LS2 GTO.

We are reaching Muscle Car territory now by buying stuff through them. Hahaha.

Be aware however you will have to dial down PE values to values less than 3/4 pedal activity in order to compensate for how stoich the tune will otherwise want to be at all times under cruise and during throttle modulation.

Sorry to be a pain, but THANK you for all of the information!

I think my next question would be, I have a 2013 4.0L TRD OR auto, that has had the spark knock TSB applied to the ecu back a few years ago. Would your baseline calibration take this OEM "spark knock tsb ecu tune" and adjust it to your baseline specs (keeping the changes that occurred with the tsb tune), or do you adjust from non truck specific tunes?

I’d like to see the read from the spark knock ECU to see what changes Toyota made from the pre-spark knock tune.

Not a pain at all! I would apply the tune to your TSB Calibration ID, so you'll keep that.

The way the HPTuners process works can be a little confusing at first, but it's actually quite simple. The changes that Toyota has applied during that TSB update will not be affected by the application of the changes I use in my base calibrations.

Even if you don't go with my baseline tune, I'm still here (as are others) to help, so please ask away.

Does the HP tuner MPVI2 actually read from the ecu or download the calibration file from a database online that matches a calibration ID of your truck?? If later can one download the calibration ID from the database regardless of what they have? (if so i can pull the Cal ID via a techstream cable i have right now as also be interested in knowing what toyota changed with that)

Gotcha! and obviously, i can save my original tune if i ever feel the need to go back to the stock calibration. Im thinking i have wrapped my head mostly around this process haha:
    • Buy MPVI2
    • Buy credit(s) [how many are needed for our trucks?, do the credits license the vehicle indefinitely or only one time flash?]
    • Contact you for your baseline tune with probably some info on the truck calibration id etc etc
    • Flash
    • Enjoy the benefits.

I think my biggest concern is safety, I know toyota left a good chunk on the table performance wise in order to have a reliable motor in ALL conditions. My truck will see 110*f ambients to negative temperatures, sealevel to 10k ft above sealevel multiple times a year (sometimes all of that within an 8 hr time period!!!) and I wouldnt want to give up that safety or peace of mind when im running hard. It would be nice to have a lil peppier truck as well as more mpgs.

    Thanks again @JustDSM

If you go through the archive (I have a few cals to put up still) you can see some of the changes.
The MPVI2 will not actually read the calibration off of your vehicle. It will conduct what we refer to as a "virtual read". The calibrations on these ECU's cannot be read from the OBD2 port and must be obtained by physically having the ECU in hand. HPT has obtained all the different calibration ID's for the various combinations of years/transmissions/etc, and supplies you with a copy of the calibration they removed from a ECU containing your specific Calibration ID. If there is an update that your truck has not received, HPT will, in the process of reflashing, supply you with the latest update available to your truck. Mine for example is a 2015 4.0L 6spd with Cal ID 304A5000. HPT supplied me with the 304A5100 update.

You most definitely can save the stock calibration (and you should!) to return the truck to stock anytime you wish.

Your process looks pretty complete and accurate. You'll need 4 Credits for the licensing of your ECU which will allow you unlimited refreshes/updates.

I 100% understand your needs and concerns. The baseline calibrations I've developed are developed around the application they're used for. The performance is increased, but we're not pushing things to the bleeding edge. The baseline calibration is intended to be used for anything you'd use or put a stock truck through. Think of it as more of an optimization process. We've trimmed the fat off the thing, and left you with the meat.

Absolutely none of the factory fail-safes are altered. Everything that is in place in the stock ECU/tune is still functioning as designed in these baseline tunes. You'll be able to use the vehicle as it was intended, in all conditions without worry.

I'm more than confident the baseline would get you exactly what you're looking for.

I would actually argue that the factory is more UNSAFE over the JustDSM tune in every instance @nd4spdbh

    Seriously..

The tunes the factory provides every truck is not tailored to individual need. It is tailored to the needs of the masses all whilst staying within compliance to CAFE, EPA, and ARB standards... contrary to popular belief, they do not know what is best for your vehicle, more over your engine. All they want are proper emissions, but the internal combustion engine can only be altered with so many emissions and software equipment to the point where they are no longer efficient or running correctly, and we are starting to reach that threshold with these modern day vehicles.

That is to not discredit the factory tune, because they provide an excellent baseline to work the engine on, but there is only so much they can do as their hands are tied from a legal compliance standpoint. HPTuners takes all factory parameters and allows you to fine tune them and tailor them to how YOU need your truck to run. Ultimate drivability and runnability control nearly to the T.

Before I go making bold and unfounded claims, I'd like to get a couple tanks through the truck to get some true numbers. I still don't think its overly optimistic to state it will have paid for itself by this time next year, though.

I'm still testing some different AT shift scheduling stuff. Once I get that where I like it, MPG tracking will be next. With the UCON, I averaged 12.5 with my normal routes (mostly city). Looking forward to seeing where MPG lands now.

Great news, got my truck up and running good again with my stock ECU mated to the UCon. So it is possible to run the UCon with an HP tuned ECU after all.

    A big thanks to @loginfailed & @JustDSM for all yall's help :hattip:

Also, cleaned out my engine bay some today!

I had to take my UCon and ECU apart to read/write the ECU with the HP tune. It was kind of a pain to get it to work, since I had to take it apart several times, but it was worth it. I haven't tested whether or not I can use the throttle mapping yet.. Might do some experimenting next weekend
