Just curious but has anyone thought of rewiring the 4WD and Overdrive buttons into dash switches?[IMG]

You have an electric transfer case. Most have a manual "J" shift transfer case. It would be impossible to do a dash switch.

As for the overdrive switch on the gear selector, I think that is an okay place.

So, my answer for both is "no".

    Interesting questions, though.

How would that effect anything though? I'm just saying with it being electrical, couldn't you just rewire it into a switch instead of a button? maybe you'd want aftermarket shifter knobs?

There is no aftermarket shift knob for the automatic shifter, they’re completely proprietary. Same goes for your push button 4WD transfer case knob.

If you had a J-Shift transfer case, the shifter is threaded and you can swap the knob.

    I get your question !

Sure it could be done but why ??

Without looking at the schematics is the factory set up a switch or a momentary switch

I changed mine out for a black one for aesthetics.

"most" don't, it's about the same amount for both (especially after 01), just many that swap want the J-shift for ease of no wiring. "No" is an opinion, anything is possible if you research. It's just a dam button, either ON or OFF. Tundras have the dash button, so again, anything is possible.

Although I do agree the O/D button is better off on the shifter itself but I can argue for an easier spot to keep your hands on the wheel while driving so, same applies, do research.

do some research and see, have to look at wiring schematic to see how it operates and what the ECM is looking for as far as signal goes. aftermarket knobs are not exactly available for our model. You'd have to custom make one to fit the auto shifter (there are a few who have done it but they were kind of janky).

the push-button 4wd knob is a slip on, D-keyed shaft with a set screw. could easily replicate that if you had the ability, auto is a different story due to the nature of how Toyota designed the top button mechanism.

I'm going to have to wire my OD to a new switch as I am using a gate shifter. It's a pretty simple latching push button it looks like, so shouldn't be a problem.

Well I managed to sever this electrical connection/wire, when removing the 4wd shift knob, when taking things apart to install a new upstream O2 sensor. Didn't even think about it after I removed the set screw and then started to twist knob to remove. Would've have severed even if I pull removed, which I believe is the way. So now, how do I fix ? Anyone got anything they can share? Thanks!

You can put the switches anywhere you want, but you're still going to be stuck with those levers with the buttons on them.

So I kinda have to ask: why?

Shifty things kinda belong with the other shifty things, so it makes sense to have the buttons on the shift levers.

looks cool, I dig the grip of the handle

but for "me" I wouldn't want to reach across the shifter in the lowest spot to hit 4wd :\
