Help me pick my next mod

Well polling says it all. Should I drop the $700 on the Tune or get the trd exhaust.

 

No experience with either but as a person who has to listen to every exhaust system out there made for 4 bangers in Hawaii, drive by my house ...get the fucking tune. Exhaust don't do anything. The tune will. I'll be getting the tune when I jump to 34s.

 

Absolutely agree with that on the exhaust.

 

I have both... get the tune. The exhaust is awesome, but at $700, you're overpaying. I paid $300.

I'm not completely sold on the tune... I'm still figuring it out. I need to try a few more settings.

I love the sound of the Pro exhaust, but the tune truly changes the feeling of the truck. You'll be way more interested in the tune, guaranteed.

 

What are you not completely sold on?
If I get the tune I will most likely run the 91 octane base. The increase in horsepower is nice but I honestly would just like a better shifting truck. Even though I did get the latest TSB in which Toyota supposedly fixed the problem I still think the truck does not shift right. I've seen a few videos from tacobandit on YouTube and what he describes is what I am looking for. How easy was it to install the tune? I'm just afraid of screwing up and essentially "bricking" the truck if that's even possible.

 

First off, don't worry about bricking the ECU. If that happened, I can almost guarantee you that Mat at @OVTune would get you back on the road.

Currently, I'm running the 91 performance gear-lock tune. Outside of the factory updated (TSB) tune, this is the only tune I've tried. I actually had zero issues with the factory tune, but figured, if it could be better, I'd like to try it.

Flashing the OV tune is super simple.

My experience with the 91 perf/GL tune... it gear hunts like crazy. Way more than the factory tune. I've heard that this is an issue with the performance/GL setting. I'm waiting until the stutter update, before I flash back to the 91 base tune.

As I said in my previous post... at least the OV tune made an actual difference. The exhaust is pretty much just noise... albeit, a great sounding noise... but $700+ is way too much for the exhaust.

 

Edit: an additional data point... I OV Tuned my truck, but didnt tell my wife... one night after some drinks, I had my wife drive us home. She immediately commented on how the truck was driving better and really liked the change. She didn't hate the way it drove before, but certainly noticed the change, and really loved it. Just food for thought.

 

Got ya, I don't see myself going to the performance version (I rarely use ect as it is). What is the shutter issue? Is that an issue with the base 91 ovtune or is that an issue that might be fixed by the tune?

I'm just looking for better shifting and added power is a bonus.

 

To be 100% honest, I'm not sure what the stutter issue is... I assume it's an issue with delayed throttle response. I doubt I have it, but I figure, there's no reason to re-tune, until the code is updated.

 

Are you trying to do any wheeling?

 

The exhaust, why? As others have said on other threads, it’s a truck not muscle car.

 

I did the tsb58 and my truck drives great, I run 93 shell gas. I'm sure the OV tune is great and I might do it as well. I have always had v8 engines and this is my first 6 cylinder. I have always added cat backs or mufflers and sometimes headers. I have done custom Dyno tunes and tottaly get it. I'm sure the driveability is greatly improved. However I wanted some great sounds and I found the pro exhaust was exactly what I was looking for compared to anything else I heard. Added a TRD cai and it sounds awesome for a v6. Just cleans up the sound of the factory crap. Total improvement in tone, really deep sounding, no popping and no drone. It may or may not add any horsepower but both mods did greatly improve the drivability. So for me I got both sound and driveability for $700 through the dealership at wholesale price.

You’re going to want gears for those tires my friend. I just bought 4.88’s for my 32” tires and every single person I have chatted with about it has said that these trucks are simply geared too high and need gears for bigger tires

 

Yeah light trails here and there. not going to be rock crawling that's for sure. my taco is my DD and have for a long time not been happy with they way it shifts. I did get the TSB done in october 2018 which is the tsb that was supposed to fix the shifting issues and I am still not satisfied. I've been lurking around the OVtune thread here and there and have seriously considered it now because of the 1.05 and what looks like a pretty easy install vs the dongle method previously.

 

I agree with SpeySquatch. You might want to consider a gear swap. The 4.88 is good if your truck is your DD and do a lot of highway driving. You will notice the difference and future-proof the rest of your build. I have been lurking around the OVtune thread too. They have made some serious progress though. Either way, steer clear of the exhaust unless you are trying to reroute it.
