High capacity fuel tanks?

I bumped into "Extreme 4x4" on SpikeHD and saw a commercial for high capacity fuel tanks. The listed company offers them for diesels only.

Made me wonder, any thoughts on this? Initially the thought of a 40 gallon tank sounds appealing to me. If I can defer filling her up to only once every couple of weeks or so. Mmm...

I was looking into these. I saw a 70gal tank but it's all race parts so pretty expensive.

 

my brother and i followed a diesel up to colorado from texas. we had to help install a steel box for firewood, and do some elk hunting. the crazy old man was towing a car trailer with that huge steel box, and hauling ASS. he was flying. we were following in a chevy 4x4..he got so annoyed everytime we had to high beam him for a gas stop. he never shut his truck off on the trip up there. never refilled his aux tank. it was badass. his tank looked like a toolbox in back..maybe two chambers totally 100 gallons. perfect when the zombies invade.

i may be talking out of my butt, but i think those aux tanks are only for diesel?

i believe the DOT wants to limit the potential fireball a gas vehicle can be..i may be wrong.

but i do see refueling trucks carrying heavy loads of gas..i dunno.

 

Jup, most are for diesels, unfortunately. But I haven't given up yet

But yes, I share your concern. We'll see how they are implemented. For now I can't even find any that aren't home made, and, well, no. I'm not going to make my own fuel tank mod.

I actually have a guy that works on my farm that has an chevy with an L-tank in it filled with gasoline that has been tapped with another line. So he just flips a switch like in older fords and gas comes from it. I'm assuming cheaper to go that route then trying to find/buy a bigger under body tank.

 

I don't see how anyone in the US would need one. Africa or Australia maybe but not here. I could buy a shit ton of Rotoxpax and gas for that kind of money. It would be neat to see someone make it work though.

 

There's been a few threads on this topic, specifically the ARB ones from Australia.

If you have the $$ and know another person who is also down for one, it's best to ship 2 at a time since the container holds two.

Something I've been looking into for a while...but man o man are they expensive.

I've seen oversize as well as Aux tanks on a few fzj80s, it is definitely on my to do list, no doubt about it, just hard to find the right one and fork over the dough.

 

I've been looking into the long ranger for a little while. It's on my list of things to buy when I get my rig set up. Definitely going to try it out. I think fitment should be fine. I THINK. hahaha

 

man i would LOVE a 700 mile tank. travel time to WNY would be cut down by about 45min to 1h. we stop once time for food and gas and that ole stop is about 1h. or more. and some times(depending on traffic gams and all) we may have to stop a little before we get their.

This isn't 1994 anymore, we have a 21 gallon tank.

I know offroad takes it's toll on fuel economy, but still, even at 10mpg, that's a 200 mile range.
You still have 3-4 gallons left when the low fuel light comes on.

One thing to keep in mind....
I had a 42 gallon tank in my '95 Suburban. It COULD go 600 miles on a tank.
I still filled it up every 250-300 miles, because buying more than 25 gallons, I'd have to swipe my card twice at the gas pump ($70-$100 depending on the station, there's a Valero in Covina that cuts off at $50, I don't even go there in the Tacoma).
Not good with an ATM/Debit card... Wells Fargo locks you out after 3 fuel purchases in 24 hours.
