Gen 1 JBA Exhaust install

So, in preparation for my supercharger I have moved on to step two, cat back exhaust (step 1was headers)

Because this is a less challenging install, I am doing this one by myself.

I had to cut the bolts connecting cat two to the mid pipe as they were rusted all to hell

My new Dremel that my wife got me for Christmas worked great for this

 

Enough old stuff, wheres the shiny bits

 

The first nut on the O2 sensor came off just fine after some PB blast

Second one was rusted so bad a socket wouldn’t even fit. Use a vise grip needle nose. Worked great, but had to go a 1/4 at a time.

Use a lubricant like window lubricant to get the old ones off, It will make life easier

 

If you choose to replace the gasket like I did and do not get a OEM, I got an aftermarket from AutoZone , You will need to use a screwdriver to push the gasket up into place as it is not the same internal diameter only External diameter is the same.

Last step is to add the muffler

Has anyone confirmed higher HP or any sort of real gains using a cat-back system suck as this JBA?

Not dyno confirmed. Stock 3.4v6 I don't think it added any thing. If it did it's probably less then 10hp

I got lucky and found mine from a local TW member. Brand new still in box $200. He sold his Tacoma before he had a chance to put it on.

 

Hope you like the JBA. I came upon their catback for my GTO just by chance (wanted a Borla). I intended to run it a couple years then upgrade, but I love the sound so much I kept it. My buddy frequently tells me its the best sounding exhaust in his mind.

 

Typically a catback is more for sound, and offers little in terms of power. So to answer your question: not much of a difference, aside from shinier metal and a nice exhaust tip. Catbacks usually have better flow due to smoother bends. They are typically madrel bent as opposed to pinch (which is how most OEM exhausts are done). That being said, the one he took off seemed to have pretty smooth turns in it.

In reality, a catback alone is usually only good for 5-10 hp (depending on the car), and a good portion of that is due to a flow through style muffler that is better than stock at moving air.

 

Stainless steel has differant sound resonance then steel or alumized steel.
Also no rusty no more.

Had to remove this O2 sensor guard as it rubbed against the heat shield causing a rattle

 

As I noted above, I intend on installing a Supercharger next. This cat back and the headers I installed on my last post are in preparation for the S/C.

I have noticed smoother acceleration and it sounds cool.

I do not expect real gains until I spend the 2995.00 on the supercharger.

Still thinking about the 7th injector

Is this considered to be one of the better exhausts for 1st Gen tacos? I used to have a second gen and there were a ton more options.

Looks nice. I used an AFE pipe and dry filter on my second gen. Really didn’t see many options other than the Magna. Good to know there are options.
