Just out of curiosity, how much do these typically cost?

Ive been meaning to buy one or two for backups, for in case crap happens when out on the trail.

I have also read on TW that the ones on rockauto are supposed to be pretty good as well. I think Cardone is the brand.

The CVJ, as @Kloverz158 mentioned, is a rebuilt OEM. They are less than the OEM ones, but not by much. I will probably fork out the money for the CVJ or OEM when that time comes. The lifetime warranty is nice on the big-box auto stores, but I don't want to have to replace them every year.

I was actually looking into the warranty on the NAPA ones. Turns out its warrantied by Cardone.

Good find! In that case, I'd prefer to have a local retailer to exchange out the part when it inevitably fails.

I will still highly consider forking out the extra for an OEM one. Or, if it isn't my daily when that time comes, rebuilding it myself.

I've been wondering this for awhile, so I'm going to ask. For those with experience with 5th gen 4runners and 2nd gen tacomas, are the tie rods, and cv axles the same part number?
Being that my wife drives a 5th gen, and Im in a tacoma, this might make stocking parts for trips more feasible, if they are. @Built2Ride do you know?

I went with Rock Auto HD versions. Beefy, but then again I would rather my CV than diff.

No they are not. Well the CVs are but not the tie rods. We found that out the hard way on a trail. Just ask @bryanbyers28

according to NAPA its the same part number as a Tacoma for the CV axle. "NMD 944082". I dunno about the tie rods

Thanks guys. this helps. after my last outing, where I blew my diff, I'm just scared about getting stranded again. I know next to no one carries around an extra rear diff, but I can at least get more prepared by stocking 1 or 2 CVs and tie rods. Ive been lucky to not have any issues with those yet, but I have seen twice where a broken CV stops the whole caravan on the trail. One guy was prepared and was able to change his out, where the other guy was SOL, and his weekend trip was cut short.

for you 5th gen 4runner guys, i have a mostly unused case of oil filters I'd like to get rid of.

wheel bearing/hub assembly is same between 5th gen 4R and 2nd gen taco.
