Tonneau covers in Canada

Management (wife) has informed me that transportation of our newest hire (9 month old daughter) will soon be a joint venture operation between her Santa Fe and my '17 DCSB Off-road.

Honestly it'll make life easier having both vehicles available but I'm realizing that having the car seat in the truck, I'm going to need a bit of secure dry storage for strollers etc.

Does any have any recommendations for a tonneau cover from a Canadian Dealer? I'd love Diamondback, but I don't know if I can justify the cost, nor will I ever use it to its capabilities.... Gotta pass the cost/benefit sniff test.

A few considerations in selecting a tonneau cover:

1) Some covers use your side bed rails to attach the cover to. This can impact the use of the side rails.

2) Some covers lower the factory bed rails about 2" and attach the cover to new rails, where the original rails were. Some accessories may not properly fit on the lowered bed rails.

3) Almost everyone seems to complain about water leakage, no matter the brand, so a 100% dry bed is probably not happening

4) Some trifold covers do not allow you to open the section next to the cab. The factory Toyota cover is this way. That is a big disadvantage in my mind.

5) I ended up ordering a Bak Revolver X2 - a roll up style cover. It allowed almost full bed access, when rolled up. Disadvantage was freezing up in extreme cold and icy conditions. Would not be an issue where you are. I like the security, as the cover interlocked all along the side edges. Some trifold covers have rather poor security latches, and can easily be defeated with a coat hanger slipped in the back to pull the release wire.

6) Truck Hero manufactures a lot of the tonneau brands. Google Truck Hero, and you will see what I mean. Not sure whether they all come from the same plant or not.

7) tdotperformance.ca and partsource.ca seem to be the two biggest on line players in Canada.

8) Don't pay extra to have someone install. Do it yourself.

 

Great tips @Auroraboy thanks! Ya a completely dry storage option probably isn't going to happen, I'm just trying to prevent rain from pouring down on some gear on trips out and about. If I get really worried about water I can put a tote in the bed to put stuff in.
What made you go for the Revolver X2 over the X4? They both look great.

 

When I bought, there was no X4, only the X2. I don't know what the differences are.

 

Fair enough... Looks like the only difference is color really. X4 is a matte black

 

The other thing I like about the Bak Revolver is that it is low profile. It is visually flush with the top of the side rails.

Other covers are thicker and sit on top of the side rails. The Toyota OEM trifold is a good example. Some people don't care, but not sure if this is a factor in your decision. Good luck in finding what you want.

 

I used a roll-n-lock for most of the life of the Taco. All metal, lockable. Really liked it though it did impact the use of the rails as noted above. Moved to a canopy now.

 

Get a bedmat if u dont have one already. The majority of leaks will travel down the bedsides and go under the bedmat and drain thru the holes in the front of the bed.

 

If you want nearly 100% dry get a single piece hard top cover. Undercover makes a really nice one, the Elite. It’s black composite and looks great on any color truck. I have the SE because they don’t make the Elite for 2nd gen. It opens plenty far to transport big stuff. I absolutely love mine. Bought the one piece because everybody with folding hard covers complained about leaks. Just a thought.

If not, Undercover makes folding hard tops where the part closest to the cab can flip up on struts. Bakflip also makes great products. They have a 10% off sale on their website that ends tonight.

@TinoTaco I saw some comments on the Revolver line from BAK, the X4 is matte but it also has improved seals and latches. Are you set on a rolling cover? Open to folding? Retractable? One piece?
I see you need it for dry storage, how else do you use your bed?

 

there are some places in Blaine that you can ship to and they will hold for you to pick up for some period of time. Pretty simple just have to deal with bringing purchase back across border.

 

Bring tools, cross border, install cover,
Return.

 

make sure you have a lockable tailgate , I had one on my fullsize cost about $950 within 3 weeks some tweaker stole it off the back ... I had the hard shell 3 fold style was great while it lasted lol ..

 

I have a bakflip, it does let a little water in near the drain tubes but not enough to worry about, if I had to do it again I would not get a tri fold, very annoying when you have to keep it flipped up if you use your box.

 

This is the other thing I like about the one piece undercover, provides tailgate security since it comes down over top of it with a pretty decent bit of lip.

 

I love my Undercover also. I haven't seen any water back there yet either.
