Im going to be getting a sinlge 10in JL audio sub. I was going to buy a new amp, but someone gave me a rockford fosgate push 40.2. I don"t know much about car audio and was wondering if i could use this to power my sub. The amp has 20 watts RMS continuous power per channel.

Not gonna be enough power, you need at least 200 watts rms

There are several good amps that you could buy, I personally run the kenwood execelon series but the newer mtx series amps are pretty good. You will get many different replies....try sonicelectronics.com

what model RF? some older power series amps would go down to
1ohm or possibly 1/2 ohm, but I cant see someone giving those amps up for free.

its a punch 40.2, all it says on the back is 20 watts RMS continuous power per channel into 1 ohms with less than 0.08% Total Harmonic Distortion from 20-20kHz

You would be surprised by the old RF amps. Typically they did 2x-3x rated power. So realistically that amp will do 80wrms bridged and if it actually does 2x rated it would be 160wrms. Try it and see how it does IMO.
