    Did some math....

    Corolla
    34mpg Combined
    13.2 Gal Tank
    Equates to 449 mile range

    Example Cost
    15k miles a year
    $3/gal gas
$40 to fill an empty tank

Need 33.4 fillups a year x $40 per fillup = $1336 in fuel costs annually

    Tacoma (mine)
19mpg (avg based on the last few months)
    21 Gal tank
    Equates to 399 mile range

    Example Cost
    15k miles a year
    $3/gal gas
$63 to fill an empty tank

Need 37.6 fillups a year x 63 per fillup = $2368 in fuel costs annually

That's about a grand a year in savings however there's a rub. The more miles you drive, the more you'll save obviously. Also, the more gas goes up, the more you'll save.

That gap can be lessened if the truck's mileage can be improved. Going up 1 or 2 mpg average can save hundreds of dollars annually. Likewise, going down 1-2 or worse can drastically increase the cost of gas annually.

I applaud people for doing the basics for increasing mileage (keeping tires inflated correctly, going easy on the throttle when able, timing lights etc) but some of the "tricks" people do do gain a fraction of an MPG just doesn't seem to make sense for the actual savings. All I really do is make sure my truck operates correctly, drive mellow around town and carpool or take transit when applicable.

HA! I didn't buy my '16 Tacoma (a month ago) to worry about mileage, even at $5 per gallon. But I didn't buy it to commute with. I'm glad it goes easy on the gas compared to my previous Tacoma, but I ride a motorcycle for commuting @38-40 MPG.

also the I4 is very durable engine and drive train, and mostly all maintainence and repairs are easy DIY which saves lots more money on repair/maintainence work. also the engine is Japanese made a big plus.

Yea that was also the other major reason =)

I love cast iron and you don't really find many cast iron DOHC engines these days. Plus I'm sick and tired of dealing with the silly intake manifolds on V6s that always cover up a bank of injectors or spark plugs. I had to take my intake manifold off of too many Ford V6s for either injectors or spark plugs. a 2 min job turned into a 2 hour job of unplugging/unbolting everything...

Not sure how easy the V6 on tacomas is to work on though but wasn't taking a chance. That and this engine was somewhat new where the 4.0 had a long track record. My cast iron vulcan V6 lasted 20 years and is still driving around today, with 3 new injectors all on the side under the intake manifold (by the time the 2nd one went I just replaced the remaining 2 as I hate taking that thing off)

I guess if you live in Alaska,Washington or Oregon you will save money on diesel, the rest of the 49 states its higher. I guess 3 out of 52 states makes it a winner o_Ohttps://gasprices.aaa.com/state-gas-price-averages/

also you can negotiate a better purchase price on the I4 most people want the power of a v6 and they can pay the extra $$ for the price and fuel

I'm late to the party obviously. I agree with those who posted it's 2019, the truck should be getting better mileage. As said, probably won't happen with an NA engine, at least with the power and performance one would expect, so the solutions would be hybrid or turbo.

I got mine in March knowing the situation, though I won't lie I'd prefer at least 20 mpg rather than the 18 I'm currently getting. But I needed a reasonably powerful, versatile vehicle that could pull a camper, etc.

My other car is an MX5 which gets 31 mpg, and I plan on driving them approximately 50-50, so my average will be in the mid-20's.

No one has mentioned what's happening with Iranian sanctions, which will likely drive average prices well over $3, plus of course the more expensive summer mix. The trend is not favorable for really low gas costs.

I was pretty torn on the V6 though I like power like anyone and if it was only a 1mpg penalty I would have taken it but the fuelly averages seemed to show more like 3-5mpg difference, that and the known reliability, so I went I4 4x4. I'm slow up the hill but I'll still make it plus she's still faster than my old ranger... I used to putt up a hill at around 45-50mph when carrying stuff... now it is ECT Power mode 51mph =)

I got the auto 4x4, its a love/hate with the power, but having a 4x4 pickup that can double as a fuel efficient offroad daily driver hauler it fits the bill, im getting 22.5mpg so where can you get a mid size 4x4 pickup that can do that.

the gas prices might rise short time, but the other OPEC countries are going to up production to replace those loses from the sanctions, also the USA is the biggest producer of fossil fuels in the world we can also produce more fuel, create jobs in our own country

Wishful thinking in my opinion, but we’ll see...

I fill up at least once every two to three days. My last fill up was about $48 and lasts me a good 250 miles in Houston. Its about $300-$400 a month for gas and doesn't help that it takes 40 minutes to drive 7 miles to work every morning. The city drives are killer but I cant complain because the mileage is on par with my BMW and the Taco doesn't require premium fuel. I drove 40,000 miles in 2018.

I don't worry about fuel mileage. I just fill it up for $50.
