Beginners tend to really over weld things because it is new and exciting

This wasn’t over welded, just a lot of surface area that needed to be welded. I fully welded in all frame plates so it was sealed and water couldn’t get in, causing rust issues.

Imagine the pain if you had to TIG weld those on.

True that. You never really know how strong a weld can be until you got one freaking tack holding it all together and you can’t break the tack cause you didn’t measure right

If you ever work outside its best to push. Keep that gas where you are going or wind will screw you. Always learned: if there's slag you drag. Mig no slag so I push : )

[IMG] Hope this is the right place for this question, since it seems the welding experts reside here. I have an old mower deck that i got used and decided to clean it up. After taking it apart, probably for the first time in a long time, i found the rust illustrated in the photo toward the inside of the two outer spindles. This thing is so old parts are nonexistent, so I'm wondering that since the bearings are still in okay shape, is there any way to squeeze any extra service out of this thing by some sort of welding reinforcement on the rusted areas? its strong enough right now, but i wonder if it is worth my time to find someone that knows how to weld to do any kind of reinforcement before it rusts further. i know nothing about welding. TIA

If you arent doing the repairs yourself you will probably be in for sticker shock when you try to get someone to fix it. Looks like a lot of it has been rusted through and some previous repair areas. So going to take some time to cut out the bad spots, plate thing, ect. Wont be hard for someone to save...just going to pay for their time

if you just want it to last a season or two it probably wouldnt be to bad but to actually repair it for years of service....just go buy something else IMO.

You are on the right place.

A decent fabricator should be able weld in a new piece.

Be aware, those stamped decks are made out of some poor quality iron. There is a good chance other areas are rotted out as well.

    In Short, it's is savable.

Got myself good a few weeks ago, and I was wearing gloves. Went right on through. It's just about healed up now, finally.

It would be much cheaper to adapt the mower to a newer deck then to rebuild this one.

The Only way I will do a deck like this is completely rebuild the whole deck otherwise your just chasing thin spots from one place to the next I have a complete new Top piece made with all the holes cut

I hate to see money thrown away

Like was said get some prices then think about things

Budget constraints and need to get through this season clean as best you can and go with something like Gorilla hair

It is not that bad Prep work is the hard part .

Just think if you were using a oxy-Fuel torch to weld When I was a youngin I was glad for that set up

With bigger gap to let some reinforcement get in there

It’s called a root. It should be about 3/32 inch gap. Remember to grind your starts and stops to get continuous penetration.

What size rod are you burning? Typically with 1/8th inch 6010 5p+ a 3/32 gap is good. Try turning the heat up a little and push in as you climb.
