Be careful using hardware store silicone as it will cause corrosion when in contact with metal. Make sure you use sealants intended for automotive body panels, either from SEM, PPG, 3M, etc etc..

I have an OEM roof rack and put on the provided foam washers. They are foam and not rubber, they failed and now I went out and bought actual rubber washers and put sealant around and in the hole as well. No issues but that it has only been a few weeks. I strongly recommend that you use actual rubber washers and use sealant to prevent water from penetrating the cabin, just my 2 cents.

As others have said before, definitely get stainless M6 fasteners for the 2 small holes in front. Maybe stainless Phillips heads for ALL of them. One of mine got so stripped i had to just cut it off. Couldn't even get it out with an extractor. Eventually i will drill rest of it out and try to retap it, when weather warms up a little.

I just completed the roof rack install this afternoon and have to thank you all for your advise beforehand. I replaced the foam washers for rubber ones and also replaced the 4 M6 torx screws for stainless phillips head screws(same length) for the front brackets. I made sure to coat the threads with loctite. I didn't have any problems with the oem supplied other hardware threads but made sure to run them all through the roof nuts before I attached the racks to the roof. Also hit each attachment spot with a nice size circle of automotive silicone. I think I spent most of my installation time removing the trim adhesive from the roof channel from the original weatherstripping of the truck. All in all it looks sweet and I am happy. Onto next mod, lol.

How exactly are people applying the silicone? Do you just put a hersheys kiss size glob over the threaded hole or around the hole.

Sorry but my question wasnt answered. Does the silicone go on the threaded hole or around it? Or both and if so you did answer.

Are you guys following the recommended torque specs or just tightening? I have a thing for stripping hardware.

Installed OEM roof racks and don't like them. I left the factory tape on the holes and just cut where the rack crews went. Now that im removing them, whats the best procedure to seal it back up before installing moldings.

Buy yourself a RAVE OffRoad roof rack to replace your oem roof rack.
