Oil change at jiffy lube question

My brother-in-law use to pay $150.00 for a synthetic oil change on his 2010 V8 Tundra. I believe I heard the words "Royal Purple". Not sure who did the work.

I agree - these sort of prices seem steep, but this is what happens when you require a service and hire someone else to do it. The service provider has many operational expenses.
People here keep saying "I can go to Walmart and get a 5 qt. jug for $xx.xx". Yes you can, but that ain't how it works when you hire someone to do it. In addition to labor, parts are marked up beyond Walmart pricing.

If you DIY, be glad you can.

 

No $113 is a rip off.

They jack synthetic oil changes up substantially over conventional when the labor is the exact same. Synthetic (outside of a specialty oil) doesnt cost that much more in bulk vs conventional. They just upcharge to screw people. Thats not right.

Now if that was $113 for an extended performance oil like Amsoil then thats a solid deal. Typically thats what Amsoil runs for 6qts.
But I doubt Jiffylube is using such oil.

 

Not true OP, you cant just look at oil and tell if its bad or not, you have to taste it with your tongue to know for sure.

Maybe...maybe not. Do we know with certainty everything Jiffy Lube did when they serviced this vehicle? Jiffy Lube and places like that do a lot of menu-style pricing. Good - Better - Best.

5 yrs. ago I took my wifes 5th Gen 4R to a Toyota Dealer for the 1st 10K freebie oil change. The invoice showed $97.00 for just oil/filter. Add in inflation over 5 yrs. and once again - what all did they really do and $113 ain't as weird as you think.

At the Jiffy lube nearby my place on 4/17/19 , I always get their signature service premium synthetic



The synthetic 5/30wt oil they used Castrol Edge Synthetic at $11 per at x6 qts $ 66 and a Mobil 1 filter at $7.99 . labor was $45 so total was $118


That same oil at Orielly auto parts is $10.99 and the filter is $10

 

Just don't go to Jiffy Lube. lol

“Not diluting oil” is a pretty big part of the whole “easy on oil” thing.

Show me a UOA from a 1GR-FE showing measurable fuel dilution after 3k Miles.

I’ll point you to the oil nerds over on BITOG and can show you numerous UOAs that show great results well over 5k, even 10k.

This isn’t a DI Honda 1.5L that is diluting fuel out of grade.

You can proselytize 3k OCI all you want based on your “real world” experience, but the evidence doesn’t suggest that fuel dilution is an issue that is going to lead to the sure destruction of everyone running their OCI over 3k as you claim. You are stuck in 1979. Heck, Toyota recommends a 5k interval with CONVENTIONAL. That’s 66% longer than your recommended change with a synthetic.

Point me to the thread on Tacoma world where we commiserate our blown engines from leaking injectors diluting oil?

The evidence simply doesn’t support your claim. 1.5 million Tacoma’s were sold between 2005 and 2015. I’d bet the vast majority ran 5k OCI or longer. How many of those are now hitting 250k miles +? Where is the rash of blown engines or rampant complaints of fuel dilution?

In 150k miles of 1gr-fe oil changes I’ve not once had a noticeable smell of gas in the oil, nor have any of my UOA’s shown even a trace of fuel dilution.

Neither 3k, nor even 5k OCI’s are required to run a 1gr-fe longer than you care to keep it.

 

Pennz Pentinum, full synthetic and OEM filter is your best bet. Auto Zone will charge you about $40 for the oil, Wally world about$20-$25. Filters, buy by the case of ten from a dealership for about $50. I was Mobil1 for years until I learned better.

Easy on oil refers to 'using oil'. In other words, one of two situations.

- putting in more oil than you drain, which means burning it OR passing it out the exhaust.

- breaking down the oil

I care to keep all of them forever. I already did a thread on injectors, long time ago, with pics. Where you are mistaken is that you don't care about your trucks. You don't know every detail, you don't own them long enough. Also, the same with BTOG. People post then don't get a good answer and sell the truck. No more posts.

Also, with Blackstone, they don't outright tell you if the oil is diluted by gas.

You did bring up one useful point, if you smell no gas, your ok-ish to run 5k miles. But I've rarely had that happen on a 1GR-FE after it's about 5 years old, NEVER had it happen older than that.

 

It really does. I've run 100 mile intervals changing oil and filters before. Changing the filter and oil. For the money, Pennz Plat/OEM filter. $25-$30 best bet!

Tell that to the members with upwards of 250k on the motor and nary an issue. Also, you never responded to my previous post regarding the oil maintenance light and the manufacturers programming/owners manual. I know Toyota didn't write the manual with people-who-make-love-to-their-trucks in mind, but it's a damn good starting point and if anything it's far more conservative b/c they have to factor the lowest common denominator (aka, the negligent vehicle owner).

My real world experience comes from my Tacoma that has 175k miles on it. Oil changes every 12,500 miles with the cheapest oil I can find.

 

Maintenance light?

I don't really understand the question? You should never get that light come on if you run an active OBD reader OR at least keep a cheap one onboard?

If you rely on that light for anything, give your Tacoma to someone who deserves it and knows what it means.

The ECU illuminates that light after the clock runs out since last reset. It has nothing to do with the health of your truck. NOTHING to do with the health of your truck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
