Just wondering if this is normal. I hit the brake, shift from drive to park, turn off the car. Release brake and car goes forward a bit and then there's a clunking noise. I figure it's the brakes? When I use my parking brake there's no noise. I know I should use my parking brake all the time.

    Well that was straightforward.

Another question. I'm backing up down a boat ramp, a decline. I switch from reverse to park, to turning off the engine. Then when I start the car again, I switch from park to drive. When I let go of the brake the truck still moves backwards. If I give it gas it gives clanking noises then it goes forward. This doesn't happen if before I turn off the engine, I switch from reverse, to drive, then to park. I use the parking brake, and I'm not towing anything. Apologies if this is really obvious.

Also normal. ABS freaking out. Happens if I go too slowly into the garage and rock back at the lip.

What? That's not his ABS that's his transmission slipping.

OP, in both cases you are simply pulling weight off of or applying weight to the drive line. You put the truck in park the weight of the truck will "rest" against the drive line and everything will become tight, like parking a MT in gear.

All automatic transmissions do this. Is it good on the transmission? Absolutely not. Will it screw a bunch of stuff up? Maybe eventually, but don't get too worried about it.

Try this next time you park on an incline... put the truck in neutral, apply the parking brake, then take your foot off the brake and allow the weight of the vehicle to rest against the parking brake, then reapply the foot brake and shift to park. When you hop back in, just hold the brake, shift to neutral, release the park brake, and stick it in gear!

This thread is over a year old. I cannot believe somebody actually told you "it's just your brakes" and nobody caught how stupid that is. How does it have anything to do with your brakes when your brakes aren't even applied?

Thanks for the reply, I've made a habit of using the parking break before letting go of the main brake and turning the car off.

I'm reviving a dead thread here but it's the closest I could find to my problem. I noticed on the weekend that when I shift to reverse or drive and take my foot off the brake I get a nasty clunk. After a longish (2-1/2 hr highway) drive home I stopped to get gas, put truck in park and got a series of 4 or 5 clunks in quick succession (while in park) Any ideas ?

You sure it's not your rear drums sliding a bit as u let off the brake? They kinda creak some times.

Yes I did and I've read many other similar threads but nothing about this happening when the truck is in park on a flat parking lot. I have made an appointment with the dealer service center so hopefully it's a warranty issue.

That sounds like the Hill Start Assist stopping your truck from rolling back

When you put your truck in park. There is a mechanic gear that locks up your transmission. It’s called a parking prowl. This is a normal sound. The gear locking device has a wide stance between locks. Your vehicle will roll very minimal distance for the locking pin to lock in place. THIS IS A NORMAL REACTION AND SOUND. For instance. If someone is to eager to put the vehicle into park. The transmission will go “click click click”. That’s the same sound your hearing while that pin is trying to set in one of those gears. People in the past have broke the parking pin while going fast and shoving the gear selector into park. Stopping and then putting your vehicle into park and letting the vehicle rest with a short roll and then the pin sitting into gear will click. Sometimes it won’t do it because your pin will set because the gear was in the right location. Don’t worry. I have included a simple picture of how it works. Remember this gear does rotate

Thanks for the explanation Jessrin and I understand what you're saying but what's happening in my case just doesn't seem normal to me. It feels and sounds like a hard enough clunk that it will likely break something if left alone. I've been driving automatic vehicles for almost 30 years at this point and have never experienced this before. Could this be unique to this truck ?

I do have to agree. The Tacoma does have much more of an audible sound that I have noticed. Now, with me not being there. You could take your truck to the dealer and have them hear it. As what I can see, your driving a 2015 model. Remember you have a power train warranty for 5 years 60,000 miles unless you paid for a longer warranty. I always use my parking brake. In fact, I stop my truck and set my parking brake before I put it in park. Most of the time I never hear the clunk. I don’t like to put stress on my transmission. Just for example, you park your truck on a hill. Put it in park. It rolls a little bit to set that park gear. Now, when you come back and start your truck. Push the brake, and switch to drive. You notice resistance on the shift lever. I hate that. That’s why I use the parking brake before putting into park.
