I'm not calling YOU out either, and I love my 1.05 93 tune, but isn't it unreasonable to flash a new tune and then immediately put the truck on a dyno? Aren't all the learned values correct for the previous tune, not allowing the new tune to take full advantage of changes in AFR, Timing, etc.? If Mat had put the requisite 300 miles on the TSB 04B04 tune before testing, the gains would likely have been even greater, no? Or, even if you cleared all learned values before running the TSB tune (which it probably does on its own?), timing and fueling would likely be very conservative until the ECU 'learned' what it could get away with.

    Am I missing something obvious?

Nope, and your questions are valid. We who are tuned all know that a file settles in over a few hundred miles. If we want to split hairs, it would've been more of a "fair" test to reset learned values (techstream) on the factory 04B03 calibration, let it idle for 5 minutes, then do your dyno pulls when up to temp. Then flash to 04B04 and follow the same procedure. Mat could've done that, although he didn't say so. These were both Toyota files BTW, I didn't say anything about 1.05.

There is an updated file for your truck from Toyota (Cal ID 04B13). My truck is an early production 3rd gen M/T, manufactured 09/15. 04B13 is miles ahead of the original factory calibration she came with IMO (04B10).

    I've farted in the seat.
The issue is drag (wind resistance). This 3 5 motor is great in a Camry. But the drag on the truck is twice that of the car. While driving 70 the motor is turning about 2000r's. The motor doesn't make enough torque to overcome the drag at that rpm range. If they tightened up 5th and 6th gear getting the rpm into the 2500 range then maybe it wouldn't shift to 4th anytime you start up an overpass. And it would probably be more efficient 40%throttle at 2000rpm uses more gas than 20% at 2500rpm.

When you have the MT all that down shifting with any slight grade or breeze you encounter doesn’t happen.

Thanks for posting that up, my dealer said they would do the updated TSB tune, just need to take it in one of these days.

The differences / gains are not from ignition / fuel / or anything like that.

From what I see the gains are from changes to valve timing on 04B04, and torque converter tuning.
You'd be shocked how terribly low power will be if the torque converter isn't locking or unlocking at appropriate times.

Just read a number of posts in this topic. As with everything I've read regarding the 3.5s performance in 3rd gen Tacos, the difference in driver experience is quite interesting. I love my new Taco, but was very disappointed by initial performance and it doesn't seem to be getting much better with a reasonable amount of break in miles. Came from a 2013 FJ (4.0/5sp auto). Was very pleased with performance and mileage of that vehicle, especially considering it was about as aerodynamic as my house and a couple hundred pounds heavier than my Taco. Was expecting at least similar performance/mileage, given the 6 speed auto, lighter weight, and slightly improved aero. This engine/tranny/programming combo sucks for use in a truck.... period. I don't even find it particularly economical either driving it as intended leaving the tranny in D. I'm no engineer, but I know this truck isn't tuned to do work under 4K rpm, and the claimed mileage from Toyota was clearly achieved driving the EPA mileage cycle... not real world driving. As soon as I'm out of warranty I'm getting a tune. Until then, S4-S5 and minimum 89 octane fuel is the only way I can drive this thing with any sense of purpose.

Very Good Points. But with a few it seems they didn't even test drive the truck??

I thought my taco would run 11’s stock. It’s a race truck after all. So disappointing.

Hmmm, I dunno? The last engineer I had the pleasure of arguing with over the whole dock was wired wrong and I'm a Dam Engineer.. STFU'd when I simply pushed his plug in further and twisted it..

I hated my Tacoma, until I started using ect power all the time. It fixed it for me. Now it keeps it in right gear to maintain speed up a hill without shifting up and down 6 or 8 times, that’s not an exaggeration either. My mpg are up also because I’m not always on the gas to make it be in the power rpms. The Ford Ranger is going to put a hurt on Toyota’s market share. It doesn’t look as good but comfort, power and tow capacity are just a 100% improvement, but we’ll see.
