After watching the assembly plant video of them making the new ranger, I will never own another ford product for as long as I live.

 

What are the doing in the factory that is so wildly unsatisfactory?

 

We've heard this before, when the GM twins came back on the market. So far, nope.

I don't know where the saturation point is for mid-sized trucks, but we're not there yet it seems.

 

For how badly the Ranger has been selling, I would not be surprised to see the Gladiator outsell it.

 

I'm curious...what exactly causes low RPMs and lugging to be "worse" in terms of reliability? I've heard this in the past, but admittedly had been shifting (MT) around 2K since I bought the truck new, thinking I would be getting better MPG, reliability, etc. This thread has inspired me to shift no lower than 3K....night and day difference in how the truck feels AND better MPG.

 

Efficiency is lost running at low rpm. You will use a lot more fuel running at 1K rpm than 2K rpm.

Low RPMs don't necessarily hurt an engine, so long as its designed/tuned to operate efficiently at that RPM range. Our engines are designed to operate more efficiently in the upper RPM range (which is why the stock gearing/shift programming is a total mystery to me). Lugging generally refers to operating an engine below its optimal RPM range. Many maladies have been attributed to "lugging" an engine over the years. Personally, I broke a crankshaft in a VW flat 4 45 years ago when I first started driving a stick by lugging the engine.

 

Trying not to sound like a goofball, but:
I suggest that people learning to be masters of the MT not watch the tach. The truck will tell you what rpm’s are optimal. The revs will vary depending upon load, grade, desire to reach speed quickly, your mood, etc.
Once you master the MT then worry about what the tach is saying.

 

I very seldom ever looked at the tach. After driving a MT hundreds of thousands of miles you don't need it.

 

I would agree with this if it were not a drive-by-wire drivetrain that lacks the consistency (or Quality Assurance checks prior to production) required for the kind of feedback you're referencing. I've driven plenty of MT vehicles in the past, and on those I'd definitely agree with your sentiments, but this truck is a different story.

 

Your opinion. Mine is quite different. I drove it 40K in one year. Feedback was fine. Every manual transmission is different.

Cute. "Lacks the consistency" as demonstrated by countless thread posts here describing exactly that. "Lack of QA" shown, for example, by Toyota's misprinting of model years on TSB's. But hey, apparently you're the epitome of a MT driver who's One with the Truck, so these problems listed all over TW are beneath you.

 

You really think that ANYTHING said on TW could be construed as a data point? Lol. There are maybe 2K members in the 3rd gen section (generous estimation) and close to a million 3rd gen Tacomas now. Worse yet, these 2K guys here are "enthusiasts" which means that every single thing they do gets magnified and embellished! In addition, this little space is on the internet, where people post about the bad stuff, not the normal or good stuff.
There is very little real data here that can translate to the real world, and that is fact... not opinion.

 

So, TSBs describing an exact condition, with clear and valid misprints (again, back to the QA) aren't valid? Hilariously, you're actually describing the exact inconsistency I originally mentioned, as (I'm really, truly sorry for taking a leap here: but you're not actually the resurrected, manual transmission Christ returned to rapture the TW forums) your truck may not have the inconsistent issue described by many others in previously mentioned thread, that's fixed with a TSB. Dude.

 

I just find it hilarious that you are using TW for any valid truck related issue. Don't know what you do for a living but Toyota and your dealer should be the only factual contacts. Do you go out to message boards to get opinions before you make a decision at work or home? Do you have to start a poll to determine if you want chicken or spaghetti for dinner?
And yes, I have talked to Toyota reps many times about various topics on the vehicles I have currently and owned previously. It is amazing the difference between what they say and what you read here.

 

Have you not gotten anything "valid" from these forums? If not, why are you here? You enjoy reading nonsense? Everyone on here is full of shit unless they are officially endorsed by Toyota or a dealership?? Once again, I'll go back to the TSB, which describe an exact condition and failed the QA process and contains a misprint, causing dozens of fellow MT Tacoma owners to NOT be able to receive the "fix" for their truck. My most recent Officially Licensed Toyota Dealership visit resulted in the Officially Certified Toyota Technician duplicating the issue with my MT (admittedly, he may also not be in MT god-mode), seeing and confirming the TSB misprint, but stating that they would not be able to correct the problem until Toyota (meaning BIG Toyota, Omnipotent Toyota) issues a revision to the TSB. This is not the only Officially Licensed Toyota Dealership I've experienced this with. Having said that, if you'll allow it, I'll use valid data AND experiences to form my opinions, one of which being that not everyone on this forum is a nitpicking, half-wit, and yes, I might even ask for dinner recommendations.

I still come here for the jokes. I come here to maybe dispel some myth and conjecture by writing posts like the original topic of this thread. I also have learned there are a few pretty sharp guys here who know their stuff. Good luck man.

 

Coincidentally, I just got done reading a post that listed the Toyota Corporate number, so that'll be my next step. If nothing else, maybe it'll be the straw that'll push the camel off the cliff, and get the TSB updated so others don't suffer through the suck too. At this point, I have the OVTune kit waiting at home to be installed, and the cable included will allow me to install the TSB software myself that the dealerships refuse to do.

All the chaos aside, I really did enjoy and appreciate your initial post here, it's encouraged me to push more on the skinny pedal and let the revs climb.
