I love those quotes when people ask about whether or not physics is taught anymore.

Yeah must not have been paying attention when they covered whether or not the plane will take off. If a bullet will fly in space. And truck folding.

In 20 years you will need an embedded RFID chip to start your autonomous electric vehicle. So yes.

I work with high school students and I encourage them to explore trades all the time. More and more actually are as college becomes financially nonviable for more people. Sad to say, for many people, college is a bad investment.

Don’t be TOO sad. It’s a good thing that not everyone can sit in a chair and listen to a person drone. I reckon if all of us could do that, and DID do that, we would have been conquered by some irrelevant country like Spain. This country needs machinists, welders, warfighters, fabricators, real pipe hitting motherfuckers.

I totally agree. I only meant sad in that many people will go into debt to prepare for a job that doesn’t exist and they’ll end up in another field or back in school.

Indeed. It’s quite a burden to have when you’re left empty handed trying to build a life. I cannot imagine.

I agree with all this too, trades should be promoted much more. Even just to get out working right away as a laborer or helper, learn a few new skills, make a little money and it’ll give you a good idea of which trade you want to pursue as there are usually a few different trades within an industry. Carpenters, electrician, plumbers usually work close together in a lot of cases and mechanics, welders, and machinists are generally working with one another in a lot of cases at some point, just as examples.

Trades/Manual skill jobs are a GREAT path...I'm talking to my son about it now (he is finishing his Junior Year of HS). My oldest daughter is in college - full ride Academic Scholarship - Computer Science & Cyber Security/Mathematics Double Major- no doubt she will make a good living (already being soft recruited). My son is scoring in the 98th percentile on the ACTs, and will get scholarships (probably not full as a boy has a tougher time) - but he loves working with his hands (we own a horse farm) and is good at it. I am a white collar/ business man. I was educated at Duke University and UNC. I make a lot of money, and am stressed out to the max - corporate life pays well because it can be fleeting, much of my life has hung on the whims of a board of directors making decisions based on speculations. I will retire soon and I'll be fine with a nice retirement plan - but I pray my son never has my stressful life. Our society has sold a bill of goods to parents and kids that there is no money/life unless you go to college - that simply is not true. Anyone that looks down on someone with dirty hands is too shallow and ignorant to associate with. Tradesmen are getting more and more scarce, while Liberal Arts Majors and other non specialty degrees are the norm ...college folks take Econ 101 - supply and demand should come to mind when predicting future earning ratios.

It really is, I am a Truck & Transport Mechanic by trade, but started working with my father at an agriculture equipment repair shop, moved to a trucking and asphalt business, and am now working for a power utility company looking after there aerial devices mostly doing hydraulics now and not as much truck and chassis work. The people I have gotten to know over the past 10 years doing this work is invaluable, you can do one trade and it will take you in many different directions if you let it, and the experience you gain along the way is only going to help you excel.

How I wish I could do it all over and learn a trade. My father was an electrician before becoming a general contractor and structural engineer. All that crosstraining and experience has benefited him ten-fold. I'm in my early 30s, but with a mortgage to pay for, it would be a huge risk for me to take an apprenticeship and start from the bottom again.

I have a pretty good paying job with amazing benefits, but geez desk work is such a drag. I love working with my hands. But yeah, 1st and 2nd gens rule and are already becoming classics. Don't know about the 3rd gens yet lol.

I also know a few guys who have a side gig to keep their sanity. They work in IT, but build furniture in their spare time etc. I know one guy who makes side money running his own forge making fire-place pokers mostly.
