Put 255/85/16s on stock OR wheels and suspension

With your SPC UCAs, you have some adjustability in centering your front tires (adjusting your lower control arms in unison with the adjustable uppers). You should be able to fit the 255/85 R16 with very minor rubbing (only when stuffed at full lock). The trick is to get a proper alignment from a shop who is familiar with aftermarket UCAs and 4x4s.

I got my Coopers ST Maxxs in a rush before doing the Mojave Road. I initially took them to the nearest shop with availability and a 4 star rating. They admitted they didn’t know SPC products well. As soon as I pulled into my driveway, I heard the rubbing. Unfortunately, I didn’t have time to remedy the problem before getting on the trail (a lot of three point turning was happening that weekend). I’ve since found a more reputable alignment shop and there is little to no rubbing.

I am running 5100s to the third notch (no changes to the leaf springs), SPC UCAs, and Cooper ST Maxxs in 255/85 R16. They performed well on the 150 Mojave miles of dirt they immediately endured; however, they are pretty noisy compared to stock and brake much slower. I have been experiencing some significant loss in mpg as well.

 

Thanks for the reply. I ordered the TC UCAs last week. I'll post how they work out with the stock wheels once I get everything installed. I'm just waiting on the shocks to come in.

 

This is cool and I didn't read all 98 pages, but there has got to be no way these tires maintain OEM mpgs.... still cool though

 

I’m getting a little less, but not too bad.

Just remember to calculate your gas mileage correctly.

For me, I have to multiply the miles on the trip odometer by 1.072 to correct for the 32.8 diameter MAXXs.

This will correct the trip computer, which will read low.

 

I did the BFG Mud terrain 255's on my stock Tacoma SR for about 6 months. I ended up going with the Bilstein 6112/5160 suspension setup with those tires. The tires fit fine stock, but tried the suspension and liked it.

Pros -Looked way better with the 255's
-You can go thru just about any mud, snow, water, sand, etc.
- Had no clearance issues- except for front plastic valance
- did not take a noticeable speed or performance hit
- fit on stock rims

Cons - Mud terrains were loud
- Drop in fuel milage
- Speedo read 10% lower
- Didn't turn as tight as stock tires
- Harder ride on E rated tires

Would I do it again? No.

Do I regret doing it the first time, No.

 

The trick is not to believe the mileage it tells you. I drive like a grandpa, so I use similar throttle as before to get up to speed and use my GPS for actual speed. Those things, plus the numerically longer ratio and the fact that I don't drive over 60 very often means I'm just over where I used to be on average with more peaks and valleys. If I'm doing good I can hit 24-26 on a drive (corrected), or keep it under 16 by driving like an asshole lol. It's all in how much skinny pedal you give it.

 

I was getting 15-16. That should tell you everything that you needed to know. LOL

 

65K miles on my set on my JK. They are long lasting- a tad noisy though.

 

Well, I jumped on the bandwagon today. They look great and seem to drive well (so far).

 

Just got some new shoes on! I do have a skosh of rubbing when flexed on the front driver's side, but I was in the mud last weekend and my caster is off. I also think my door ding affected the fender liner a little bit.

 

Huge favor! Can you measure the height of your truck from the fenders?? Lol sorry! I have the same setup, and recently lifted my truck but I forgot to measure it before the lift

 

I am looking at this exact setup right now.
If you don't mind me asking, what is your setup in the rear and what are some shortcomings or things you would do differently or add something?

 

I would relocate the shock mount and get 14 in kings. I actually plan on doing that

 

If I did that I'd just commit to to Chevy 63's.
Do you have the ext travel rears with adjusters ?

I gained an inch and a skosh in the front, closer to 1.5 in the back, from my highly casual measurements. Probably some substantial error from my camera angle and lackadaisical tape measuring. On the other hand...

 

I like all the info on these tires guys. Any updates on fitting the spare in it's stock location with this size tire?

I really like this thread: I can see how decent stock OR wheels actually look by simply adding some meaty rubber around them.

I don’t particularly care for the stock OR wheels, but haven’t really found a set of wheels that make me want to spend the money.

Once you put some nice rubber around them they don’t look half bad.

 

Sorry for the resurrect, but I got my Tacoma two weeks ago and am now looking at tires. I like the look of your truck with pizza cutters.

Questions:

1. Two years later, would you still recommend going with this setup?
2. Would you say 255/85-18 tires will rub with mudguards on?
