Point being, you can be an educated man/woman and still work in the skilled labor trades.

Yeah totally. But BUT if you spent a ton of money on a degree on permafrost conservation but ended up being a machinist, you could have used that money elsewhere. Is what we were saying.

    And language.

But they aren’t in debt for it, and when they get out they end up taking over florist shops.

But now you're best suited to providing machining services to the oil companies on the Alaska pipeline, as your intimate knowledge of permafrost is a leg up over your unlearned competition.

Trust me, I'm an engineer that has sat for countless hours, in an auditorium, listening to a professor drone on about countless subjects. I actually had to spend 40 hours of my life learning about arctic engineering (permafrost) to get my license in Alaska.

I'm always surprised when I find use for what I once thought was useless information. Granted, I'm sure I've collected more useless info, than worthwhile info in my life.

Also, I just made my original statement, because sometimes an anti-education mentality can be just as elitist as the proponents for higher-education. Not at all saying you're in this category.

Touché on the Alaska thing. I feel like you’re feeling me, I am not anti education.

850 000 for a house in vancouver is a steal. People pay that for 2br-3br condos over here...really sucks.

The 4th gen will be out sooner rather than later, and based on the new Rav4, Camry, and Corolla and LC/LS500. Toyota isn't playing any games right now. Their new models are excellent vehicles and look better than most Toyotas in history (save for the 1993 GS, MR2 and Supra).

I think the 4th gen will knock it out of the ballpark and the 3gen will be seen as the dark years.

At some point Toyota will make all cars and trucks on the same platform. Unibody truck like a ridge line.

    uhhh no, let see why:

    1) manual t-case.
    2) massive amounts of ground clearance; approach angle, break over angle and departure angle.
    3) non plastic bumpers which don't break apart at the first sign of trouble.

...then again you can just mod your gen3 to be cool

You might be laughing now but it’s already becoming a thing. I saw a piece on Al Jazeera not too long ago about how people in London used them. They acted like it was nothing. “It can’t be so dangerous if we do this to our cats and dogs.” Newer electric cars already use your phone as the key, it’s not too far fetched people will program their chip to do the same. https://www.popsci.com/my-boring-cyborg-implant

I think of the third gen as the same as when the old Toyota pickup when it had the 3.0L V6. I was hoping that they’d change it up and do a refresh but I think Toyota will do the same thing with the previous generations and go the full 10 year production with minimal changes throughout the years. Maybe an update to the front fascia and that’s about it. Who knows.

To answer OP, nah sorry. I thought first gens would be a thing but I don’t think they’ll ever really become classics. At least not for another decade or two; even then they might just fade away from importance. They’ll just have the cult following from the Toyota cult.

Trades are great until you get a big slow down, which inevitably happens every decade or so. Guys like Stocklocker will remain fully employed because they have decades of experience. The 21 year old apprentice will get laid off for possibly an extended period of time.

I've seen it happen a few times. I work in craft for a Telecom utility so I was reasonably shielded from the last few recessions.

They could but it wouldn’t make sense. They’ve dominated the midsize truck segment since it began. Why stop production when people keep buying them?

People forget that during the “Great Depression” only 15% of people were unemployed. My best advice: be one of the other 85%. Society does not stop and turn off the lights when the economy slows.

I have not always had decades of experience, but I always did what it took to stay busy, which kept me working steady even when I was new.
