Didn't you also mention how it was done in MO earlier in the thread?

Just seems like if the dealer is allowed to collect it, that information has to be given to the state somehow so I offered an example of how that is done somewhere else. Could be useful or relevant. Might not be.

OP, go down and talk to them.
If they aren't A-holes, pay them.
If they ARE A-holes, tell 'em you aren't paying, and why.

Fuck that, don’t pay the dealer a cent. They make you sign a separate paper that says you owe them nothing and they owe you nothing after all finance papers are signed.

It is possible you will have to pay tax in the end but I certainly wouldn't let the dealership be involved at this point. Tax isn't their concern anyways. The DMV will collect tax when you go to register it if the dealership did not send collected tax along with the sale information. I specifically tried to not pay sales tax at my dealership and asked to deal with it at the DMV but unfortunately they wouldn't have it... This stuff can vary from state to state though so it may be worth looking up state specific procedures. I have no idea how exactly tax works in the case of buying out a lease.

No. You must pay tax your state. You can not get out of it and dealer is not liable if the contract does not state they collected it. Your contact is the contract. You will not get the title with unpaid taxes.

I always thought it funny Jeff was smaller than Columbia even though it's the Capitol. I used to live in Linn, about 20 minutes east of there.

This is a good idea. Dealership may have a history of ‘forgetting sales tax’. AG office would know if others file same complaint. While I have no legal experience, this feels like a scam. Folks are getting more creative daily with their attempts to take advantage.

As I stated earlier, my dealership charges a convenience fee for handling the registration/tax paperwork. They give you the option of doing it yourself. Pay the dealer or pay the state directly. Either way the state will get their money but they won’t get it twice. If the dealer already paid it and didn’t collect it from the OP, that’s on them. If they’re being assholes about it I would tell them to dine on a bag of phalluses...

That's the interesting question and would be very telling of the dealerships true intentions. Only way OP finds out for sure is to go to the DMV. If the dealership already sent the tax mistakenly pulling it from the "tax-less" sale price that'll be a lucky break for OP. No chance they get to the walk that back if I'm the customer.

I leased my first Ranger. Got a phone call the next day that there was an error in the paper work. The finance guy left out a digit on the buy out at the end of the lease. Loved that truck but I wasn't a long term relationship kinda guy at the time and went back in for the "new" paperwork. This definitely helped when i went to buy my second Ranger and got a great deal as they didnt forget me coming back...nor did i let them.

Everyone telling the op not to pay , or giving advise to have the dealership pay it because it's their fault . You should first unerdstand that the dealership is only a agent that collects State DMV as well as State taxes for consumers .The tax is due because tax on a lease is paid on the monthly payment only , meaning the the residual payoff that was due to buy the truck, that the op refinanced, never had sales tax collected.
We all know anything that is bought there is sales tax added . If you buy the same vehicle from a private party you will need to go to the DMV and pay taxes and DMV fees . Hasn't everyone made a mistake or two during their job. How are we to know if this mistake costs this guy his job at the dealership . Give him a break.
Getting anything in life for free is always good however this is one item you will not get for free . One thing you can count on is death and taxes The dealerships contract will show no sales tax was collected , they will not pay it because it was never collected and the op will be responsible.

If the dealer guy wants to be a dick about it, then yeah, I'm not gonna give him a dime. If he comes to me apologetic and I may be persuaded.

What state are you in? Apparently some say the dealer is responsible and can’t go after you for it:

Removed the yellow floor mat sticker.
Most states require you to pay sales tax for the full price of the vehicle when it's leased. I don't see why you should be double taxed. I think the guy is trying to bilk you, but I haven't seen your paperwork, so can't be sure.
