    Tacomas are passenger cars that are shaped like trucks. If you want to use it as a truck then you have to make some changes. Gears, suspension, bed stiffeners.

    Most people don’t (and the Toyota engineers know that).

    You are probably right. But I think that’s the context for the video and also why so many people are modding their Tacomas.

    Read the first couple posts in the 5.29 thread. I know most people go 4.88, but I was really surprised to read the OP’s experience when he was still stock and got his gears. I would have expected it to run like a tractor or redline at higher speeds, but that wasn’t the case. What I got from that thread is that related to the engine in our 3gen, these trucks are geared really high from factory.
