Looking for any tips or insight!!!! Long and short of it is my truck is drinking the pink stuff. I had my frame swapped and somewhere in the 6+ months it sat and 24k worth of work a new radiator cap was put on. Started having some overheating issues and took her in. Was told the rad cap was bad and the radiator failed the fume test. I was then given a quote for $6800 LOL!!!! Truck has 265k on it and a bunch of new and old work. She is sitting in the garage ready to come apart and I am working on getting a motor from YOTA YARD here in Colorado. Going to swap a newer 4.0 wile i figure out what to do with the original. Doing my best before i start taking things apart to figure out what problems or struggles i will face and getting prepared for them. That being said..... any tips, tricks or insight would be greatly appreciated.
    THANKS

A cherry picker will test the tensile strength of wire harnesses that you missed.

Take tons of pictures beforehand. Bag and tag everything. Use painter's tape to label all wiring harnesses, hoses, and everything else that gets disconnected. Clean all the bolts and bolt holes to get accurate torque readings on reassembly.

I just pulled an engine last week. KEEP TRACK OF EVERY SINGLE BOLT. Can’t tell you how many we mixed up or lost. In terms of wiring, yes the engine hoist will let you know real fast what you forgot to disconnect. And try to get a lift rated higher than 1-ton. The one we used couldn’t extend the pull arm out fully because of the stupid working limit of the lift. So the more reach it has, the easier the entire process will be.

Thanks guys! Got most of the wire harness unplugged, pictured and labeled. Top of the manifold off and rad drained. Gonna handle the alternator, ac and power steering next. Still a bit unsure as to disconnecting the trans without loosing all the fluid though.

You unbolt the flex plate from the torque convertor and leave the torque convertor in the trans. Then the only trans fluid issue is the cooler lines after you pull the radiator.

In regards to the trans, remove the engine WITH the trans still attached. Much easier. We tried the other way first and wish we did it that way the first time. Once removed from the vehicle. Disco the transmission from the engine. Pull it back enough so you can get to the bolts holding that huge drum in place. Once you disconnnect that, should be easy. Oil will get everywhere, but any other option will drive you insane

Yeah I know. The best advice I could give anyone is make sure you get the engine lift that is 2 tons. Don’t cheap out for the 1 ton. The heavier one can extend the arm out longer which means you can lift higher and clear the engine compartment. We had the 1 ton and because the arm was so low, we had to lift as high as we could go and push the truck back while using a huge pipe to angle the engine

Ive had to finangle every engine ive ever pulled out.

Easiest thing for bolts imo is putting back in the hole they thread into. You cant mix them up and they dont just fall out.

WOW!!!! wasn't trying to pull the transmission! Somewhere i read that you can pull the starter and get to the bolts for the crank to drive plate??? That posed more questions about lining it all up on install but figured Id cross that bridge after i had a big hole in my truck.

You can pull the engine without the transmission, but it is leaps and bounds easier to pull the two together

Ha!!! i was looking into doing a 4 blot diesel swap but all the extra fab work turned me away. Doing this all in the garage so Im a bit limited. Toying with the idea of overhauling the original and building it to handle a turbo. Want to swap it for now so i can wheel this summer wile I build things. I love this truck but wouldn't argue with a bit more power!

It is easier to pull both together unless you have a way to suspend the trans inside the truck without it falling to the ground. I would pull both together and split it on the ground. I would put the engine in and Old tire then wrap a strap around the trans after taking out the bolts that hold the torque converter to the flex plate and then remove the bell housing bolts and carry the trans away with the engine hoist and put that in another tire
